Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley spent the final years of his life as a recluse, battling a crippling drug addiction that would ultimately kill him in April 2002. However, according to Alternative Nation, Staley nearly made a musical comeback in 2001 as singer of Audioslave.
As Staley’s friend and one-time roommate Morgen Gallagher revealed to Alternative Nation, Staley had planned to audition for Audioslave, the supergroup launched by Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk.
“He said he had gotten a call from the old Rage Against The Machine members and they were putting together a new project, and they wanted him to audition. He said he was going back to treatment and then going to LA to do the audition in a couple of months.”
However, Staley “never made it” to rehab and Chris Cornell instead received the job. Less than a year later, he was found dead in his Seattle apartment due to a drug overdose.
