In the theaters The Help
At home we've been watching a ton of documentaries lately. The stand out one we watched is a creepy as fuck documentary called Cropsey last week. Cropsey is one of those urban legends that came from New York boy scout camps about a madman in the wilderness that kills kids. The documentary focused on a guy that was convicted of kidnapping and killing several kids throughout the 70's and 80's. It's mostly the film makers interviewing witnesses and walking around the closed down mental institution where the killer lived.

What are we in for? It's a good story. It's by no means perfect or 100% accurate and I think a lot of folks have gotten really caught up in what it's not rather than focusing on what it is. Which is a story that illistrates an important and ugly part our our history but focuses on the good that comes from people when they stand up for what's right even when that is scary and unpopular. The movie is lighter than the book but I think it captures the spirit rarely well. I enjoyed both quite well

Saw The Magic Trip yesterday about Ken Kesey's road trip across the country. Not the best film ever but I went in expecting a disjointed mess given the subject matter. Still it was interesting from a historical perspective of the early days of the counter culture movement.

Last night I watched that Superheroes documentary that ROVER had mentioned. On one hand, you kinda go "well, cool, fuck up some bad guys", on the other hand you see how fucking sad and deranged these people really are. I want to see that.

'paradise lost 2'
y'know, i really hope john mark byers is found 100% clear of any wrongdoing, 'cuz he's such an over-the-top character that i almost want to like the guy, lol..... not so much at the beginning (like in 'paradise lost 1'), but by the time you get to the end of part 2, you can tell the whole ordeal has taken a major beating on him over the years. of course, if he's guilty of anything, then fuck him....but if not, hell, i'd might even buy the guy a beer, haha...

He is really creepy. When I watched the first film he kept setting off alarm bells as the kind of guy you want to avoid being around...by the end of the second one I was completely terrified of him.

watched 'paul' last night. still too early to tell how it ranks against 'hot fuzz' or 'shaun of the dead', but i did LOL quite a bit. when watching the end credits, i chuckled when i discovered that it was the real steven spielberg who talked with paul on the phone when looking for inspiration with 'ET'....
i can't stand kristin wiig on SNL, but i've liked the roles she's played on the big screen, including here. and i never expected to see blythe danner & sigourney weaver show up near the end.....actually, pretty impressive casting all-around IMO.
i'll have to check it out again...

i never get tired of 'hot fuzz'.....that movie deserves more love. if you're a fan of that, you'll probably enjoy 'paul'. plus, it touches on subject matter that would surely piss off phantom, lol.....

on another note, i noticed my DVR recorded 'new york doll' yesterday, so looks like i'll be checking that out in the coming days....

i've been hearing mixed reviews about it.....guess it'll end up being a $1 redbox rental for me.
watched 'new york doll' last night. pretty good movie, not great, but it picked up steam once the reunion was announced. definitely a sad ending, but more of a happy/sad ending as opposed to a tragic ending, if that makes sense. kane seemed like a likable guy, which made me want to root for him. was it just me, or did he sometimes sound like woody allen when expressing his thoughts? lol

I'm sold! Speaking of pissing off Phantom, last night I finally sat down and watched Angels And Demons. Cheap thriller I know, but I'm a sucker for conspiracy theories, and those involving the church are always so juicy. Entertaining, some beautiful scenery, fuck I wanna go to Rome! And my god, if people actually believe some of that crap like they do the Davinci Code then we really are doomed. My wife loves those movies (and the books), but thinks Hanks was miscast.

I saw Bridesmaids and Horrible Bosses.
Good. Nothing more, nothing less. I expected Horrible Bosses to be funnier, but it did have a great cast and there were a few funny moments.
I think both films dragged on a bit, both IMO would have benefitted being a little shorter.

watched 'thor' tonight. i was entertained, truth be told. i think much of my enjoyment had to do with the "fish out of water" element, which was good for some laughs ala 'star trek IV'. for that reason, i'm not sure i'd enjoy a sequel as much, since that'd no longer apply. nonetheless, i'd still put it ahead of most superhero flicks i've seen, which admittedly ain't saying much.....

Saw Transformers 3. Not bad. First two films were much better IMO.
Didn't think the new girl (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) was as horrid as people made her out to be.
Lacklustre script, and too long a movie killed this. I'm sure a fourth will come along and it'll be great to make up for it.
On the flip side, it regenerated my over all interest in Transformers. I went back to see the first 2 films and started looking at comics and merch.
Optimus Prime is now my desktop wallpaper at work. ;D
