I have always loved Van Halen but I have never liked David Lee Roth. I was glad when he left the band and Sammy Hagar joined. I appreciated the musical progression of the Van Hagar years. I felt like they were a tighter, more professional band with Sammy. Their music was more melodic and Eddie finally achieved a tone that was rich, warm, and beautiful by Balance. They were the best live band ever with Sammy. While I respect Dave's studio work, he is annoying and his live performances detract from th musicianship of the band. Viva Van Hagar!

Love the Van Hagar era. It was different, but they wrote some good music and were great live. Saw a couple of the 2004 tour shows. Bittersweet way to go out for that era. I cast the blame on Eddie though. Now that Eddie is clean, it would be good if Sammy and he broke bread and let bygones be bygones. They don't need to make music again (although I'd be up for that), but just reconnect on a friend level.

I really hope Sammy and Ed will kiss and make up, so that Van Halen can end with Sammy. It probably won't happen because Sammy won't just pick up the fucking phone and call Ed - instead he communicates his desire to be friends through Twitter.
Ultimately Dave is an embarrassment and I hate seeing Van Halen reduced to what they have been these last couple of tours with him. The Van Hagar albums blow away A Different Kind Of Truth as well, so it would be great if there could be a final album with Sammy, that allows them the time to properly write songs as opposed to the rush job on the 3 new songs on Best Of Both Worlds.
Time is ticking away - this needs to happen in 2018.

A Different Kind Of Truth was and is a fine album, but DLR is absolutely fucking gobshite live and Tokyo Dome is unlistenable because of him. Can he not even keep to melody lines he wrote?
I much prefer Sammy with VH than solo. Working with Ed forces him to lift his game and the results are usually good, but I think the ship has sailed. Eddie won't even discuss Sammy in interviews and asks journalists not to talk about him. The best chance we had for everyone to mend fences was in 2004, and that ended with a whimper rather than a bang.

I have NOT been a fan of Sammy's music career choices since Van Halen for the most part, so tat's also part of it - Eddie forcing/inspiring Sammy to deliver. I think ANYTHING is possible with this band, who knows. I like much of the music on Truth, but that music would be better served with Sammy's vocals ala Balance/Humans Being II.

Van Halen is Eddie. It doesn't matter who sings.
If I had the choice, I'd hire a singer who could handle material from the Roth and Hagar eras and do justice to both. Cherone certainly had the pipes to manage that (I saw the VH3 lineup live in '98), but the material they recorded with him wasn't what people wanted from the band and he got the blame.

Van Halen has to have either Dave or Sammy. Audiences won't accept anyone else. Eddie is essentially forced to work with Sammy or Dave if he wants to make new music or tour.

If both Sammy and Dave were dead or otherwise out of the picture and Ed wanted to go out one last time to play songs he wrote from all eras of his career, who would you choose as a frontman?

Not sure. It would have to be someone with killer pipes. It's harder to do the Sammy stuff over the Dave stuff, so they need a guy who can wail when he needs to. How about you? Jon Stevens?

]How about you? Jon Stevens? BWAHAHAHA! (snort...) I'd say Sebastian Bach for the Hagar songs and Michael Starr for Roth. I'm no fan of Steel Panther (the joke gets old after about fifteen minutes), but he certainly has the chops.

For lack of a better example now, I would have preferred that Eric Martin got the VH gig over Gary Cherone as he also tried out.

I'm not keen on Eric Martin at all. Like James LaBrie, his vocals put me off getting into a band I might otherwise enjoy. Ditto the Mark Slaughter fronted incarnation of VVI. There are some great songs on All Systems Go, but the recording has no balls and I can't get past his voice.

I hate to always bring up Glenn Hughes - but similar to Iommi/Hughes, I think a Van Halen/Hughes album would be interesting. Even prime Coverdale/Van Halen. Both Sammy and David probably have the record for most songs with love in the song title. Let's just dig up Ray Gillen - vocals handed down from God.

Interesting. Tony Iommi says in his book that Ray wasn't good with lyrics, so he got Bob Daisley to write most of them for The Eternal Idol. Paul O'Neill's name pops up quite often in the credits of the first Badlands album. My guess was he wrote the lyrics, but I could be wrong.

I forgot about O'Neil - so maybe you are right even though Gillen has credit on songs as well. One of the singers up for Gillen's replacement was Rob Lamothe - an incredible singer, who was in the band Riverdogs with Vivian Campbell.
