Read this earlier today. I haven't followed the show for a few years now and prefer to watch the original series I grew up on. Matt Smith was the WORST Doctor EVER and while I loved Peter Capaldi's performance and thought he did all he could to get the character back on track in the episodes I saw, the scripts he had to work with were fucking woeful.
Three seasons is about average for a Doctor and has been since the eighties. Anyone who didn't expect such an announcement about now is kidding themselves.

I am surprised that the producers don't try to get an actor to stay for 5 years at least when it comes to contracts. It seems like a new actor is signed and then two weeks later, he is leaving. It must suck for fans to get used to a new Dr. Who - eventually love him and then he has to be replaced with someone audiences may not like or takes some time getting used to.

In the 70s, Jon Pertwee stayed for five seasons and Tom Baker did seven. These were the Doctors most old school fans grew up on, particularly in Australia due to constant repeats. Besides Christopher Eccleston, who left after one season because he didn't like the show at all and took the job as a favour to his friend Russell T Davies, and Colin Baker, who was unfairly sacked by the BBC after two, everyone else has done three years and got out.
Peter Davison MIGHT have hung around for a fourth year in 1985 had he not had a disagreement with the producer over the direction of the show. I wish he'd stayed on. It would have made things more stable.

I did, but the four specials he did in 2009 were average to poor and his two part finale really shat the bed. I'd remember him much more fondly if he'd regenerated (into anyone but Matt Smith) at the end of his third season in 2008.
Wicked will be here soon to tell me how wrong I am. Ignore him. Americans don't understand or appreciate Doctor Who properly even if they enjoy watching it. Did you know the new series, if you can call ten years and counting new, is a Canadian co-production? Sydney Newman, who co-created the original show in the sixties, was a Canuck also.
