I don't know about you, but I like drums to be just as important as all the rest of the instruments - loud and in your face, but I find that on many albums in the last 10 years or so, even with bands that have great drummers - the drums are mixed way in the back and you can barely hear them in parts of the song. The focus is on the guitars and vocals.
Now granted, albums are often poorly produced anyway these days - but I don't know how any band can listen back to an album that they just recorded and be happy with the slight tappity tap in the FAR background. I want to hear everything the drummer is doing. This isn't just about keeping time.
Do you agree that the drums are practically an afterthought with minimal importance when it comes to the album sound or do you not like drums too upfront in the mix and actually prefer drums to take a backseat to everything else?
I want this:

It's easy to tell the difference between a great drummer and a bad one. No one confuses Rikki Rockett with Neal Peart. Drums are important and it is a skill.

I don't know what it is, but I love the drumming in this song. It's not complicated, the song isn't that great - but the drummer Ken Mary, who tried out for KISS - just have a fantastic groove going on. I think he would have been great in KISS.

Neal Penis sucks...Give me Moon or JB any day Neil Peart doesn't suck despite your preferences. If you want to talk about drummers who suck, Steve may have something to add to that discussion regarding Peter Criss.

Ever see Neil Penis try to do Buddy Rich....Laughable! Peter Criss doing Buddy Rich, or anything more sophisticated than a backward three year old bashing on an empty ice cream tub with a wooden spoon. Now THAT's laughable. The stupid cunt was ideal for KISS at the time because he matched their music's level of sophistication perfectly. My top 5 living drummers: Neil Peart Stewart Copeland Ian Paice Mike Bordin Jeff Burrows

It's no surprise that Wicked and Psychosaint are those morons. Even this is amazing with Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys.
