I am surprised this is a love song you give a pass to Steve. It's schmaltzy, cheesy and more appropriate for Leif Garratt, Andy Gibb or yes John Travolta. It is embarrassingly awful.

The truth is, it’s all of the things you said, and more. Not everything can be as epic as Zeppelin. This doesn’t try to be (he saves that for Take Me Away-Together As One). This is an obvious stab at housewife lite rock. It fits more within the realm of Bread, America, Ambrosia.....and mostly succeeds. And, it’s got a KILLER guitar solo played by Paul himself. Being someone who grew up on Ktel records that were loaded with lite rock, it fits that niche nicely, and is actually a very relaxing song for a little kid who grew up in the 70’s needing a break from hard rock, and needing comfy, cozy lullabies every now and then for sweet dreams. It’s kind of pointless to stack up it up against other hard rock ballads. It’s obviously not even trying to do that, and should be recognized in the proper context. You have every right to not like or even appreciate where Paul was coming from, but it’s far from being a bad song. Quite the opposite.

It's obvious what Paul was trying to do with even having a song like this on his album and it just comes as contrived and not authentic. It sounds phony and forced.

I'll admit nostalgia is a big factor. I first heard the song when I was very young and, as SCB says, it had a lullaby like quality to it. Still does, as much as the lyrics sicken me today. I also really enjoy the guitar solo.
The only track on Paul's solo album I don't like is It's Alright, which reminds me of everything I detest about RARO and Love Gun. Wouldn't You Like To Know Me is filler, but I can listen to and enjoy it without lunging for the skip button.
I thought Move On seemed like an odd choice to perform with KISS on the Dynasty tour as it works so much better with female backing singers. Tonight You Belong To Me could have been the new I Want You in the live set, and Love In Chains or Goodbye might have gone over equally well.

I totally understand if it's a nostalgia thing and let me just say that I LOVE Mr. Make Believe. Not to mention Always Near You/Nowhere To Hide.

No word of a lie, I tear up every time I hear Mr Make Believe. It takes me back to Christmas '81, aged five and surrounded by the family who always made me feel loved and safe. Those days won't come again.
I still have that Best Of The Solo Albums LP, complete with 'Wise Up To The Elder' badges and stickers that came with the Australian pressing.

That is wonderful and I totally understand that kind of memory. I have to question though your family giving you a KISS album at age 5, you know because KISS was dangerous then.

I was into them the year before. The 1980 Australian tour hype got its claws into me at a very early age and never let go.
One of my very earliest memories of any kind is sitting in my mother's '74 Corolla in the carpark of Arndale shopping centre while she did a grocery run. With the window down and the radio tuned to what was then 5AD, I munched on a cracker and heard I Was Made For Loving You for the first time. Can't stand the song today, but at four I thought it was pretty awesome.
The Corolla is long gone (Mum drove it until it fell apart), 5AD is now Mix 102.3 FM and the shopping centre is still there although it's a bit of a shithole nowadays.

Is that little boy still there from time to time?

Sometimes he likes to come out and say hello. Being a grownup is so very boring, though.
I was recently asked to revisit my earliest emotional reactions to the music that's been so important to me throughout my life, so I put on Killers and tried to conjure my sixth birthday (when I first got the album). That's one of my favourite memories to go back to because it's a place of innocence and pure joy, but this time it really hurt. I feel further away from that daydreaming little boy and the people who loved him every year, but there's nothing I can do to stop it.

I know your mother passed as did mine, but do you still get together with family at Christmas time - father, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

I do, yes. My Dad and Stepmother 2.0 will be staying with me at Christmas, so that will be a good time for all involved.

As far as his delivery sounding forced, he could very well have been gacked to the nines on some high quality blow. I wouldn’t doubt it for a second, as I always thought that I could ‘hear’ the coke in his voice on some tracks (such as this one).
