I may take a lot of heat for this, but I personally found nothing special about this supposed great album. It was the same sleaze hard rock that I had already been listening to for years and there is really NOTHING original about them. I will never understand how people thought that Guns N' Roses were fresh somehow, when there were bands doing the same thing before them and who got signed the same time that they did. It's a good album for what it is, but it's certainly not some epic breakthrough album that the uneducated music fan seems to think it is.

Appetite For Destruction has an edge to it that was sorely missing in the late 80's. Motley's Dr. Feelgood also had an edge to it. Guns was dirty in a glam world. 80's hair metal was so over the top it was a parody of bad ass rock bands. Guns was genuine looking. No doubt there are some stellar rock songs there. Both bands mentioned have certified assholes too.

Appetite is a great album. After years of 80's shit, an album with edge was way overdue.

I thought it sounded both new and retro all at the same time. I quite like the album.

It's still one of my favorite albums. I don't know if it was a breakthrough album but I loved it from the first note.

It might not have been breakthrough in the same way Nevermind was, but it sure was close to the same level of phenom just the same. It was an album and sound people seemed hungry for...
You could make this argument about many highly touted artists and albums though. You see this done all the time with The Wall, Sgt. Peppers, to a lesser degree Destroyer, etc. That's how you know it's a great album when people start saying "Man, I don't get it...."

I mean, it's all pretty tuneless stuff that doesn't sound very good on piano, but....

For me it brought "Hard Rock" back as a genre. I loved the album then & I love it now. Great songs, well played & Axl, for the complete, douchy, scumbag prima donna that he is, is untouchable on it. A+

It's probably my "most purchased" album ever.
Originally heard it via a dubbed-off cassette from a friend who told me it was the best thing he'd ever heard. Unfortunately, he'd taped over some other tape (I'm almost wanting to say it was something by Molly Hatchet) which wasn't long enough, so it cut off somewhere in the middle of "You're Crazy."
Then I ordered it on cassette from the RCA Music Club, but a Walkman eventually ate it, so I bought another tape from K-Mart. When I got a CD player, it was one of the first things I bought...but that CD either got too scratched or stolen, so I bought it again. Years later I bought it yet again on CD from Wal-Mart, simply because I wanted to hear what the censored version sounded like (turns out the Wal-Mart version isn't actually censored at all, just the booklet). Then after that I found a vinyl copy at a flea market and bought that one.
Somehow 20 years from now when music is being implanted via chips in our brain, I'll probably buy it again. My only regret is that there was no 8-Track or reel-to-reel version for me to waste my money on.
