Donald Trump today took lots of shots at John McCain, including––most shockingly––the fact that he was a prisoner of war while serving in Vietnam.
Trump’s been feuding with McCain after McCain said Trump is “firing up the crazies” with his outlandish rhetoric, and Trump fired back by calling McCain a “dummy.”
Trump sat down on stage with pollster Frank Luntz at the Family Leadership Summit and continued to fire back at McCain (while still bragging about the crowd he drew because that’s his modus operandi).
At one point, he said he supported McCain in 2008, but doesn’t like him very much now. Luntz pointed out that McCain’s a war hero, and that’s when Trump said this:
“He’s a war hero ’cause he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
The Republican National Committee released a statement this afternoon condemning Donald Trump‘s attack on John McCain‘s war hero status.
In case you haven’t heard, Trump slammed McCain today by saying, “He’s a war hero ’cause he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
That comment was too much for a lot of conservatives, especially Trump’s Republican presidential rivals, and, it seems, the RNC as well.
This is the statement released by RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer:
Senator McCain is an American hero because he served his country and sacrificed more than most can imagine. Period. There is no place in our party or our country for comments that disparage those who have served honorably.

To say that Donald Trump has crossed a line would be to assume that he hasn’t done so in the past. But this time, he went too far for a lot of people––conservatives especially––with his comments about John McCain.
Trump––who didn’t serve in Vietnam and got draft deferments––attacked John McCain today over, of all things, the fact that he is considered a war hero.
McCain, for those who don’t know, was shot down over Hanoi, captured as a prison of war, and tortured while in captivity. If you want McCain’s full accounting of what he went through, read this. Today Trump, after calling McCain a “loser,” actually said, “He’s a war hero ’cause he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
Well, that pretty much crossed the line for a LOT of people, including his own Republican presidential rivals and conservative writers and pundits on Twitter.

This will certainly help Jeb Bush unfortunately.
