So I am a huge Black Crowes fan and maybe even an odd one at that.
I think their debut album is pretty weak outside of a few songs, but that album and the awesome Southern Harmony And Musical Companion are generally the albums that people say are the best.
I really dig the more experimental later albums - hippy dippy stuff, etc.
I also love Chris Robinson's and Rich Robinson's solo stuff.
So while I have been looking forward to new BC material, I haven't liked the situation when it comes to the band. Basically a bunch of nobody musicians backing Chris and Rich. Steve Gorman, Marc Ford and others were essential to the band as well. You can tell that the band is lacking without them.
My first impression of the new album as this isn't a review yet is that it seems very color by numbers. They basically decided to follow a formula repeating aspects from other albums to go for some kind of comeback album that will appeal to the masses.
It seems very unlike both brothers when it comes how they generally are creatively, because in many ways they are almost anti-commercial and just create the music that interests them. They are clearly going for something similar to the new Rolling Stones album - something to please even the most basic Black Crowes fan, which is probably the point with what they have done here. It just comes across as more selling out to me given how they have made albums in the past.
I will give my review as I listen more. Please give your feedback/review for any fans here unless I am the only one.
