Sequels are often poor ideas in hindsight (Exorcist II anyone??), but many more than cut the muster. Name the sequels which better the original release. A few of the obvious ones:
The Empire Strikes Back Aliens (although I honestly probably prefer the Scott original...but it's CLOSE) If Revenge Of The Sith can be considered a sequel to the previous two prequels, then it counts.... Before Sunset (although that one is close too) Star Trek II

The Godfather II is slightly better than The Godfather I.

i kinda prefer the original 'terminator' over part 2, but it IS kind of an eyesore by comparison, budget-wise....but most people i know prefer T2.
i also liked 'hellboy 2' better, but i realize many people here probably hate both of 'em, lol...
'blade 2' is great as a stand-alone film, definitely better than 1 or 3, and has more genuine scares than either....
while 'exorcist 3' may not be as good as the original, the gap between it & part 2 is absolutely ridiculous. but as far as individual scenes go, there's one scene in part 3 (the hallway scene) that made me jump in my seat higher than anything in the original.....
i actually prefer 'star trek IV' over the rest. not big on the original crew, more of a TNG fan...

T2 certainly looked better, but in no way was it the better film. Had a better budget, that's about it. It's a good film, I enjoy it but there's a lot to dislike (and I'm not even taking the ginger kid with the terrible mullet into consideration here.) You are wrong sir.

Vandalay...agree on Exorcist III. TERRIBLY overlooked thanks to that steaming pile that is The Heretic and that scene you mentioned STILL makes me jump and I've seen it probably 10 times.
I also prefer the original Terminator, but only slightly. I feel the same about Alien as well. That said, a great pair of ones and twos there though. No shame.

Evil Dead 2 is much better than The Evil Dead.

I disagree. The first one was relentless and wipes the floor with subsequent instalments. All that shit making Arnie 'more human' in the sequel was ridiculous. When he gives the thumbs up at the end as he's descending into the molten metal, it's embarrassingly cringeworthy. I'm not saying it's not a good film, because it was, but the original was way better. You are wrong as well. But it is interesting to note that T2 does usually appear on media lists of sequels that are better than the original.
