George Lucas Adds 'NOOOO!' to 'Return of the Jedi' Blu-Ray
Will the most hated moment in the Star Wars prequels become the most hated moment in the original trilogy too?
Lucas's non-stop efforts to "fix" Star Wars are continuing onto the new Blu-Ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga. We've already heard about the addition of a CGI Yoda to The Phantom Menace, and we felt we were pretty understanding about that. But now George Lucas has reportedly changed the ending of Return of the Jedi so that Darth Vader screams "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" as he kills Emperor Palpatine.
The film originally ended with Emperor Palpatine almost killing Luke Skywalker before Darth Vader makes the silent decision to save his son's life and betray his master. The badass mofo doesn't say a word as he picks up Emperor Palpatine and drops him to his death. In the new version, George Lucas apparently felt that no one understood what was going on, because now Darth Vader says "No" before picking betraying the Emperor, and screams "NOOOOOOOOO!" just like at the end of The Revenge of the Sith as he kills him.
The clip, not quite official, is below. Sometimes people complain that criticizing the special editions is nothing more than fanboyish devotion, but ask yourself... is this in any way better than the original?

I've gone on about this on FAQ, but to me it's much ado about nothing. Are the changes completely unneeded? Yes...no doubt. Do they destroy it for me, though? Hardly. To this day the only change I'm ardently opposed to is the Greedo/Han scene because it changes Han's character and motivation; it santizes him. Vader saying "no" before chucking Palpatine merely (though again, with zero necessity) articulates what he was thinking (thanks George...had no idea he was conflicted here)...but it doesn't change his motivation at all.
The only more ridiculous than all his silly tweaks (I imagine Lucas waking up in a cold sweat, realizing that Ewoks need digital eyelids!) are the hyperbolic reactions to them.
