The Freewheeler mIRC guide for Windows
Ok folks, since HM seems to not have clicked the "on switch" on the FW chat build into proboards, so I'm gonna pull up my good ol' "how to" writing skills. I will be editing this later, to get rid of the IRC basics portions, but for now I'm gonna write a full guide for Windows users.
First and foremost you'll wanna download mIRC, it's one of the most used IRC clients since the mid-90s. Obviously use the "download MIRC" button, and yes it's commercial software BUT you can use it indefinitely and it will just remind you that you haven't bought it.
Once you've installed it (standard stuff there, you guys have web-browsers and likely Flash, so you know how to hit next on an installer ) you'll want to open up the client (the software you connect to IRC with is called a client) and up will pop this screen.
If you're going to use the "easy" version, I have two files for you to download at the bottom of this post, it will eliminate the need for MOST of the manual setup described/pictured here, all you'll need to do is setup your username/email and nickname then press "connect" <--- this will be the preferred method for us freewheelers, easier is ALWAYS better
You'll want to select anything under "efnet" as the server, and press "select". It will bring you to this screen
This is where you can choose your username. It's a 9 character limit, so keep that in mind and it's called "nickname" or nick for short. Now it's time enter in something under e-mail and name (they can be anything, as you see I used cducharme@cducharme.net and that's not a real address ) and then we can hazard pressing connect.
You'll see a "status" window pop up, it's ok to minimize that while the program does it's thing and connects with an EFnet server. Then up will pop the "favorites" box when you are connected.
This is pretty daunting looking right? You'll want to delete all the channels it comes with by default, and just have a clean slate. So press "add" for me.
Under the channel field we're going to type "#thefreewheeler". *IRC lingo time, channel equals chat room, and # equals the symbol for channel.
Click on "join on connect" then press ok.
Double click on #thefreewheeler and you'll pop up to this.

Easy walkthrough
Download these two files ASAP. You can use these links or the attachments from my two replies down the topic.
mirc.ini
servers.ini
Download & install mIRC like described above.
Go to your computer's search function (windows vista & 7 users just need to hit start and then start typing, XP users hit search computer under the start menu. Never used 8 so you gotta figure that out yourself.)
Search for servers.ini and replace the file in any directory that says "mirc" in it (should only be two results, the file you downloaded and the one in MIRC's directory) with the downloaded servers.ini.
You'll know you have the right one because the one I want you to use is much smaller than the default one.
Do the same as above for mirc.ini
Now when you start mirc up, you'll just need to set a new nick and that's it. Convenient right?
As always, just message me here on FW with any questions and I'll answer them, and help get you connected.
IRC basic Commands
So, you've got yourself connected, you see me and suikoden (the bot) and you wonder HOW THE FUCK DO I MAKE THIS WORK? Well, have no fear, it's as easy as typing what you want to say into the field on the bottom of the channel window and pressing enter. Then bam, I can see what you typed. Nifty huh?
Want to know how to message on IRC? That get's a bit more complicated. You either double click on the name and that brings up a private chat box, or you type "/msg Whoever Whatever you want to say" without the quotes.
that brings me to IRC commands. All IRC commands begin with /. So if we say use the part command we mean type "/part #channel".
/part <---- departs the channel you type after /part
/join # <---- Joins the channel (see a theme?)
/me text <--- describes actions to other users in the channel
/quit message <---- quits IRC leaving a message of your choosing as the quit message.
/msg user text <---- sends a private message.
That's the basics of IRC, go ahead and do this on your first connect please "/msg Cducharme I am now on IRC and am from the freewheeler, can you help me?" so I can direct you if you need any help.
