Back in December, even after the director himself separated himself from the project, director Michael Bay was said to be in talks for a fourth Transformers film. Now that news is pretty much official as franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently spoke with MTV News and when asked about a Transformers sequel, he revealed, " “Michael [Bay]’s going to direct it. It will be in the summer of 2014.” However, going along with the news that we've heard about Shia LaBeouf not returning, the film will blend only some of the original films' cast members with new characters for a pseudo-reboot. More details below!
Di Bonaventura only had vague details about the sequel, but here's what he had to say:
“I think we really are going to do a reboot there. [But] what that’s going to be, we don’t even know yet…. We’ve got to get a story first. It’s a hybrid because there’s still continuity going on, and there will be a lot of new cast. Whether there’s anybody from the first cast, we don’t even know yet. But it’s going to be a whole new story. But the characters that would certainly come along would be Optimus and Bumblebee, I’m sure.”
So there you have it. No surprise that Bay is coming back to direct. I'm willing to bet that his being able to direct Pain and Gain, a smaller budget passion project he's been developing for awhile, was likely made possible if he agreed to take on another Transformers flick. However, it's not clear whether or not those rumors about back-to-back sequels are true or not. At the very least, we'll be seeing at least one more Transformers sequel in just over two years. Hopefully that allows plenty of time for a decent story.
