Some great shows there!
In terms of comedy shows, may I also recommend Mrs Brown's Boys; Peep Show, and Little Britain? I'm sure I'll think of others, but off the top of my head, those are some really good ones!

In Australia in the early 80s it was The Goodies (heavily edited to fit the timeslot) at six and Doctor Who at six thirty. If not for that weekday double bill, I and most of my friends might have grown up to be typical teenagers . When I discovered Monty Python in 1991 (Mum hired me a different video every week over the summer holiday and I watched them all until I could recite them), I gave up all hope of even passing for normal. Fast forward to uni days, when a mate would get tapes of all sorts of comedy delights from penpals Over Yonder (this was pre internet, just). We spent hours at his place devouring Goodness Gracious Me, The Fast Show, Whose Line Is It Anyway? (the proper one with Clive Anderson), Chelmsford 123, Drop The Dead Donkey and various Harry Enfield sketch shows. Spin my nipple nuts and send me to Alaska, how could I forget the mighty Red Dwarf? Back when it was good and Rob Grant was still co-writing it. Series 7 onwards has its moments, but overall it's about as worthwhile and enjoyable as reunion era KISS. Earlier this year I met a 'lady of negotiable affection' (ahem!) who I chose because she sounded like the original Kochanski. I could have sat with her for two hours and just listened to her tell me 'it's over there, where it says captain's office. Where it's always said captain's office.' And how about some love for Spaced? Add Sherlock to my list too, though it can be a bit smug and overly self aware. I liked Steven Moffat much better before he became Steven Moffat in capital letters.

"Fawlty Towers" is truly superb...I think its cause was helped by the fact that they limited it to just 12 episodes, so it ended with viewers hankering for more. What do you guys reckon to the Carry On films? My boyf. (an American) can't get enough of them - that and "Are You Being Served?" He's a bit 'old-fashioned', bless him...

Are you being served? Is great.
My favorite current British sitcom would be Friday Night dinner.

The Carry On films are legendary. As you say, Are You Being Served is ace! It was my first introduction to British comedy. That and Benny Hill. I'v never seen any Monty Python to this day. I know...scandalous! BlackAdder is also fab. The FUNNIEST show on British TV right now imo, is Mrs. Brown's Boys...

The late great, British comedic actor, Kenneth Williams. That voice!
Legend of the Carry On films...

Actually, when you think about it, the Carry On films comprise LOADS of unique and unmistakeable voices - Kenneth Williams (as you mentioned); Sid James; Barbara Windsor, and on and on...I wonder how much of it is down to certain individuals starting out in radio? I know Williams did, but I'm not sure about the others... I think what I also like about the franchise is that, unlike today's films, it wasn't afraid to incorporate old people, fat people, ugly people, quirky people - and sometimes they were the butt of the joke, and sometimes they were the heroes, or love-interests! There wasn't this modern-day obsession with homogeneity, with everyone being slim, young, and uniformly glamorous... I mean, yes, there's no getting away from the fact that they were a product of their time - sexist, racist, homophobic - but, ironically, they were also innocent, fresh, and in some ways more all-encompassing, refreshing, and idealistic than the jaded realism and stereotyping we see today...I still love 'em, and find 'em funny, even whilst flying the flag for feminism in the face of their blatant - and wonderful - political 'incorrectness'!

Gotta say I barely remember carry on, worth downloading them? We love all kinds of English speaking tv shows here (I like Scandinavian as well but the lady hates subtitles) so I could probably get her to watch with me.
Also, I'm addicted to British panel shows. Especially 8 out of ten cats and would I lie to you

"Would I Lie to You" is HILARIOUS! One of my favourites, however, may not appeal to a trans-Atlantic audience because it's a political panel show, "Have I Got News For You". Other honourable mentions must go to "QI", and "Room 101".
As to which Carry On films are the best...Hmmm...Personally, I like the Doctor / Nurse / Matron ones, along with Henry, Camping, and Abroad...But that's just me; others may differ!

The best spy show ever...
The Sandbaggers
It was so realistic that one of their episodes was banned from production by the British government. The show's creator and writer, Ian Mackintosh, had been part of the intelligence community in Great Britain, though exactly to what extent is unknown. He died under VERY mysterious circumstances after the show's 3rd season in 1980 (plane crash, but the plane was never found).
Great writing, great acting, lower than low budget, but it didn't matter, the show was unbelievably great.
That's the first episode. It is far from the best of the series, but it's still great.

The Carry on films are awesome. You can't go wrong as long as the cast includes some of Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Bernard Breslaw, Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Connor.
Carry on Camping is probably the gold standard but Doctor, Dick, Abroad, Again Doctor are all great.
