Say what you will about Van Hagar compared to Van Halen, but certainly a new Van Hagar album would have much more commercial songs and more marketability in terms of pushing singles to casual VH fans and the general public.
I am also sure the first single would blow away Tattoo if they got back into 5150/FUCK/Balance mode. VH have only hit number one with Sammy, so do you think they would do it again? Let me stress that I am not saying it would be better, but strictly from a sales point of view to joe public, would Van Hagar appeal to the housewives and fans of commercial hard rock again?

Why? Keep in mind - Van Hagar was way more successful than KISS during the same time period and yet people expect KISS to hit number one with Monster. As well - Chickenfoot and Sammy solo are irrelevant. When Sammy and Ed got together to make albums - sales happend. I think you are answering this question based on QUALITY and not the simple fact that commerical shit sells. Look at Nickleback. A 2012 Why Can't This Be Love type song would sell better than Tattoo to the GENERAL PUBLIC, who haven't been waiting 100 years for a Van Halen album with Dave. |

That type of syrupy, slick, commercial Pop Metal is dead.
Kids won't buy Van Hagar, and their mothers already have enough Van Hagar CD's to make them happy.

Not in these times, no. In fact, Sam Halen would've sold FEWER copies this first week than the new DLR+VH record. That's a complete guess, but I'll stick with that. None of that erases the sad fact that NO DLR-VH album has ever been #1 (outside a hits record) and EVERY Hagar-VH album went to #1....but I still think it would underperform compared to Truth. Getting a #1 today is all about timing. Adele was already #1 and got a post-surgery return to the stage and a Grammy-week bump. Whitney Houston is selling like hotcakes for no reason other than she died. Maybe EVH will kill himself (or Dave) and VH will take the top spot.  |

no way van hagar debuts at #1. maybe it would've done well enough to reach #2, but it wouldn't have outsold ADKOT.
chart position is a big "meh" to me, anyway. i mean, VH's debut peaked at #19, yet it outsold any of van hagar's #1s by a country mile.....

Seeing how Air Supply and Foreigner can't sell albums anymore then I suppose the metal equivalent would be DOA too. Isn't like Chickenfoot is burning the charts up. Van Hagar was a different animal. If they never broke up and there wasn't Cherone and the years of inactivty, they probaby would still be doing well to some degree. |

Just guessing,but it probably would have been close,after all it would have been a reunion album for the Hagar version of the band.But they did prove one thing though,it's better to have the album available at all outlets on the day of release.

Bruce Springsteen's first week sales for his last album was 223,700. Given that, I'd say Van Hagar probably would not have done any better regardless of the circumstances. |

I always liked Hagar's VH stuff quite a bit better than Roth's. But VH typically isn't my thing.

I was not happy about VH without Dave, but I can't deny just how huge they became when Sammy stepped in. Chickenfoot can't sell more than a Dave-fronted Halen, nor could Sammy solo, or any other project he has been involved with....except for Van Halen. |

Chickenfoot can't sell more than a Dave-fronted Halen, nor could Sammy solo, or any other project he has been involved with....except for Van Halen. I agree. While VH fans are happy - the album is not commerical at all and has no Jump or Panama. From a record exec's perspective - there are ZERO potential hit songs here and nothing that he could sell beyond just the reunion factor. I give VH credit for releasing an album that isn't that marketable from a song perspetive to the general public, but something to please the die hard fans. Van Hagar would have had the better shot at something crossover. All it takes is one cheesy ballad. |

I still disagree but really what does it matter. The important thing is that there is a DLR Van Halen album that DLR Van Halen fans can enjoy. That's what is really important. I'd rather have that than an album with crossover hits, as most of what crosses over these days I find pretty dreadful.
