Point is, I think the LOTR trilogy is incredibly flawed, obviously The Hobbit is much more flawed. The entire idea of dragging it on for 9 hours and lazily making the action scenes CGI fests is pretty sad but the core story is awesomeness. Comparing it to the SW prequels is pretty fucking stupid. Those could be made by Ridley Scott in 1982 and still fucking suck because on paper they're complete fucking shit. Trade negotiations don't make for riveting sci-fi. The comparison to the Star Wars prequels seems to be fair for die hard fans of the LOTR films that can't stand The Hobbit films, because the quality overall has gone downhill just as bad as the Star Wars movies. If you do a Google search - LOTR movie fans are making that exact comparison like this: The Hobbit Trilogy is to Lord of The Rings as the Prequels are to Star Wars. It's not a perfect comparison but it's still qualitatively sound. The two prequel trilogies went off the rails in very similar ways. One failed more, but both were massive departures from the quality that people could reasonably expect.

Comparing it to the SW prequels is pretty fucking stupid. It suffers from many of the same problems: clunky dialogue, awful romance subplot, shitty script, poor direction, over-reliant on special effects, pointless characters that serve no purpose played by famous actors. I stand by the comparison.

the funny thing is that LED never said they weren't flawed, but yet enjoyable anyhow. crazy notion I realize.... I guess anything short of hating them is being an apologist or completely non-critical. (Cool your jets, Dan, before you think it's directed at you).

My wife who watches the extended versions of LOTR 10,000 times a year it seems - was just so surprised that The Hobbit films sucked so much when it's the same creative people involved. But then again, Coppola did do The Godfather III. I mean it would be one thing if The Hobbit films were done by Guillermo Del Toro as originally intended - then you could say well the movies are not good because Peter Jackson didn't direct them, but unfortunately that isn't the case. It is Peter Jackson and it seems like he has lost his mojo, considering so many LOTR movie fans absolutely hate The Hobbit films due to the extreme differences in quality.

Is The Hobbit less flawed than every other blockbuster or Marvel film that you kill with your still very entertaining brand of mocking and criticism?

To be fair - Rocky and Apollo fight again. Does that count as not gay? It's only gay if the balls touch.

I would have loved to see Del Toro's Hobbit films. He was pushing for two of them; the first one to be based on The Hobbit and the second to act as a bridge between Hobbit and LotR. I'm sure he would have done a serviceable job, or at least better than Peter Jackson. Too bad.

Or the Before Sunrise films. I said to cleanse his soul, not lubricate his ass for a good hard fucking. See - movie mocking goes both ways.
