Great series, for me - I've been revisiting it a lot after catching With A Vengeance on the other day.
Die Hard - Amazing film, excellently paced and so simple in story. The wit of McClane and the tough direction make it an instant classic. The setting services the story well without making it feel claustrophobic. An unmatched star in its genre. Die Hard II - Die Harder - Well done sequel, a bit rehashed from the original but the stakes are high and it's a bit darker. The Temple of Doom of the series. Die Hard - With A Vengeance - The chemistry of Jackson/Willis is perfect. New York setting is great and the film breaks away from the original two films' formula - and it works. Live Free Or Die Hard - Great return to the series. Updated plot that is very much possible, great action and set pieces. McClane is older but doesn't miss a beat. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull of the series a bit. A Good Day To Die Hard - Where to begin...someone was paid to write this?! How does a series go from 94%, 78%, 65%, 84%...to 12% with this film on Rotten Tomatoes?! The worst sequel I can think of to a beloved and continually successful series.
Anyone love this series? Favorites?

I felt like the last two reached far too much, but the first two and (mostly anyway) the third were awesome

Terrible writing, poor direction, incomprehensible story-line and just...awful. It deserves the endless maligning it receives. The third was stellar and you can feel it was directed by the man that did the original.

Never seen them. With the exception of The Long Kiss Goodnight, I don't care for this type of film at all.
Noo Noo. I no like blow shit up action movies. I no care.

Steve the writing in the first is solid, good gritty feel to it that harkens to some of the best crime thrillers. If there's one you MAY enjoy, it'd be that one.
And saint as for the fourth entry I felt it was a neutered shadow of the first three. The fifth was just an embarrassment worthy of The Phantom Menace. You've yet to hear me say it, but that film made me ignore the ENTIRE prequel trilogy.

And saint as for the fourth entry I felt it was a neutered shadow of the first three. The only thing I'd agree on is the lack of an R rating - but the uncut version fixes that a bit. One thing you hopefully could agree is that it was at the very worst a competently written, shot and acted film compared to the fifth which was one of the worst sequels I've ever seen. Amateur, pedestrian, terribly written and shot, etc. The reception of the first four - being consistently well loved and received from fans/audiences - to the drop off of the universally panned reception for the fifth is jarring, so stark.

Well comparing it to the fifth will be unfair, as the fifth is the nightflight level of retard of the series. Compared to the first three it's a big step down.
I even like Justin long and enjoyed Kevin Smith's cameo, just didn't think the plot was plausible or even well thought out. Granted compared to what came after it's king Lear.

Loved the first three. Fourth one was fun, the unrated version was an improvement over the watered down theater release. 5 was crap. I hope they do another one. Can't end the series on that note.

Love the first three with a passion. Hate the last 2 - doesn't even seem like the same John McClane character in those.
They should have let the character Die Easy after the 3rd film.

Die Hard - Simply one of the best action/suspense movies of all time. It raised the bar.
Die Hard II: Die Harder - I love this movie. To me this one is nearly as good as the first one. It has a great cast and the plot is very good. And I love Renny Harlin's direction. Not a bit of letdown for me.
Die Hard With A Vengeance - This one is a half step down from the first two, but still a great action/suspense movie.
Live Free Or Die Hard - John McClane still kicks ass! This is a very, VERY good movie. I just watched it a couple weeks ago. It was a great way to bring back John McClane. Aside from that ridiculous scene with McClane VS The Plane it was very plausible, and the movie is well directed and well written.
A Good Day To Die Hard - And then the wheels fell off. It's not a horrible movie, only because it's almost not a movie at all - it's more of a montage of action scenes than a coherent movie. There is a semblance of a story there (a little), but as for character development there is even less than there is plot. And this one is led by John McClane's son, not John McClane. John's just along for the ride - which is totally unacceptable for a Die Hard movie.
I would like to see one more Die Hard movie, if only to (hopefully) see the series go out on a better note than it would if A Good Day To Die Hard remains the final movie in the series.

Glad you love the first four, like I do. I love how the fourth kept the same feel/style but had a plot that brought it into the 21st century. The second one is very underrated - it has the same atmosphere as the original, in a way - and the same formula of a single setting, same characters, etc. The third is great, to me. Your assessment on the last one is spot on - it's hardly a film, at all. There is no coherent dialogue. It's just action sequences with Bruce Willis.

First one is epic.
Second one is entertaining.
Third one is better than the second and actually pretty damn good.
The rest are shit.
