I didn't expect much out of paul so I wasn't disappointed. It's solid enough to not leave a nasty taste in my mouth. As for comparing it to Shaun and Fuzz you just can't, it's not part of the Blood & Ice cream trilogy, done by the competent Edgar Wright. Also, Frost is arguably the lead in Paul and he's just NOT a leading man. Even given Pegg's unleading man look, he's very much proven he can carry a movie, like he did with Run, Fat boy, Run or How to Lose Friends and Alienate people. I mean neither of those movies would be worth a pint of my piss if he wasn't in them.
As far as Prometheus goes, I'm so fucking gonna see that in theaters. I LOOOOVE Scott's Alien and got a big ol' sci fi boner over this film.

The downside to Prometheus is that a few of the characters seem pretty stupid and do some stupid things (especially considering that they're supposed to be highly paid experts in their fields). The upside is the overall plot and the fantastic visuals.

Written by the same people, performed by the same 2 lead actors and even the relationship between the 2 is similar to earlier films. The missing ingredient was clearly the director. It doesn't have to part of any trilogy imo to be compared when they had so much in common.

Finally saw Twilight... the Rifftrax (ex-MST3K guys) version.
And now I can finally truly say that I completely do not understand how this became a cultural phenomenon. Maybe the books were better or something. The movie is fucking aaaaaaawwwwwfulll. Like Manos: The Hands of Fate awful but with a bigger budget and maybe one degree more competency. There's no way in hell I could have made it through this movie without the running MST commentary and even then it had some rough spots. (But neverminding the movie itself, the Rifftrax commentary is pretty hilarious - enough to make me consider watching the rest of the series this way.)

Just finished Crimes and Misdemeanors. Not my favorite Woody Allen film, but definitely a good one.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 on blu ray.
Very good movie - very stylish. Good acting, great visuals, and the movie is jsut really entertaining. Style over substance for sure, but what style! And Sonny Chiba's in it!
The blu ray looks phenomenal, by the way.

It doesn't have to part of any trilogy imo to be compared when they had so much in common. You are half correct on the written by part. from paul From Shaun See the missing ingredient? The same one I said. Without the competent Edgar Wright doing co-writing and directing, it has less in common than you may think. Now Pegg gets a co-write credit on almost everything since Spaced btw, and he appears with frost often because they are friends. But the projects without wright have all been very different than the blood and ice cream films. Hence the "you can't compare" remarks

Some junk I'd seen before but not in quite some time:
Drop Dead Fred (1991) - Huh. Y'know, kids' movies used to be a lot dirtier. And darker. Talk about a movie that can't figure out what it wants to be. Hadn't seen this since it was new-ish, but looking at it with adult eyes, it's kind of an odd duck. On the surface it's a goofy kid-flick about imaginary friends, but really it's more a look at Phoebe Cates' character's terribly damaged psyche. And man, those eight years between Jedi and this weren't very kind to Carrie Fisher, were they?
Beetlejuice (1988) - Yep, it's still Beetlejuice. Never been a Tim Burton fan but I've always liked this one. While watching it yesterday though, it bothers me how Baldwin and Davis die. The fall from the bridge isn't very far, the water doesn't appear to be very deep, and their windows were rolled down. Why the hell couldn't they get out of the car?
Kalifornia (1993) - Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis and Agent Mulder stroll cross-country in an old Lincoln convertible and kill a few people along the way. It's not as good as I thought it was back in high school when I'd last seen it, but it's still a pretty darn decent "psychological thriller" type flick that's somehow been rather forgotten despite its stars. Worth a look.

Drop Dead Fred, it's alright, if they'd let Rik control the show it'd be in everyone's video collection. Love Beetlejuice, Burton had some good ones in those early years, before he became mr. remake. Kalifornia, Natural Born Killers for pussies. I always remembered Kalifornia as a NBK ripoff, but it wasn't until watching it the other night that I realized that it actually predates it. Definitely some similarities though, and Lewis is pretty much playing the same character. Oh, and apparently there's a Drop Dead Fred remake in the works starring Russell Brand. Color me skeptical.

Fuck me running. I like Russell Brand, but not in re-makes. He's hilarious if he's originating a character but fuck he sucks playing someone else's!
I only remember Kalifornia for the itty bitty titty flash, hey I was horny pre-teen!
DDF Was awesome then, and only slightly less so now. I didn't get all the subtext as a kid, but I think it kind of enriches it for adults and being an adult takes away the whole plausibility level (hey I am an adult now and know imaginary friends are for kids and schizos) balances almost all the way out.
Beetlejuice is just great, but you are 100% correct about the deaths, WTF is that shit?

I finally watched Thor. May have mentioned I worked backwards as I saw The Avengers but hadn't yet seen Captain America or Thor. Had a few "aha, now this makes sense" moments after the dots were connected. Quite enjoyed it, a couple of tiny moments where the film dragged but the anticipation of when he was going to get his damn hammer were greater than anything. By the way, HELLO, Chris Hemsworth. ;D

'the castle': i liked this movie alot. awesome character development. despite how loopy the kerrigan family is (especially daryl, the husband/father....what a riot he is, lol), you totally want to root for them. several LOL moments, and a few moments where you ache for the family (and neighbors, too) as well. the family's incompetent lawyer is good for some laughs, too. anyhoo, long story short, it's a "little guy vs. big guy" movie about the australian airport authority trying to force the kerrigans out of their home so they could expand their facilities. you probably can guess how it ends, but the journey is worth it IMO....

Lots of painful looking scenes, made up for by rampant lesbianism and Padme Amidala rubbing one out.

i almost feel guilty for not hearing about it sooner....better 15 years late than never, 'tho ;D it happened to come on cable TV yesterday, the plot summary seemed interesting enough & i figured "what the hell".....ended up enjoying it alot. the daryl character cracked me up....is he in any other good comedies? as kooky as the kerrigans were, most of us would be so lucky to have a family dynamic like that

Strange Bedfellows - if you've seen I Now Pronounce You Chuck + Larry, this is basically the Aussie version. Funnily enough, Schneider and Caton had a public spat over this as Caton accused Schneider of stealing the idea of the film, giving it to Sandler who turned it into Chuck + Larry. Here's more on the guy anyway: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_CatonCurrently he stars in a T.V series called Packed To The Rafters. Good Aussie films can be tough to come by, but The Castle is definitely one of them.

wrath of the titans: yeah, i knew ahead of time that it wasn't gonna be a thought-provoking movie, but i wanted to give the 3D TV a whirl by watching an actual 3D flick, so i went with this one. some nice eye-popping scenes made it a worthwhile popcorn flick, but not much to rave about in terms of writing & acting (despite liam neeson being in it)....

battle for terra: wanted to watch another 3D flick, and i found this one on starz on demand. wow, this was WAY better than i thought it'd be. an animated CGI movie that has some similarities with 'avatar', but actually predates it. however, 'terra' manages to tell a better & more emotional story in 80 minutes than 'avatar' does in 2.5 hours. apparently this movie slipped under the radar when it was released in theatres, which is too bad 'cuz it deserved better.
