Shot on video movies are one of my favorite things to nerd out over - and pretty much my favorite sub-genre of cinema.
It's pretty much as anti-mainstream as it gets, most people won't give it a change simply because of the medium (and yet - they watch video shot TV shows, because I guess camcorder fiction is easier to handle with a sitcom) but I've been a big fan of it for a number of years, and I do believe there are quite a number of pretty cool movies shot this way.
Of course, most of them aren't very polished, most are pretty crudely executed but it's really part of the charm - and it's fun to see feature films churned out by normal people you might run into in the street - not much money to put into these things, usually a few thousand dollars, but they definitely work hard on it and come out with something extremely entertaining.
Now, most newer ones suck ass - because it's pretty much impossible for the movie to just sit on the shelf unless you never intended on releasing it. Distributors like Pendulum put a bunch of pretty crappy new SOVs in their mega packs for 10 bucks, so.... the care, I think, as a whole is pretty much gone.
Don't get me wrong - there were some hideous SOV movies in its prime, when there was somewhat of a "quality standard" to live up to (hahahahaha) like PHANTOM BROTHER or BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL (as entertaining at that one is), but.... I am quite fond of these bizarre things, and the directors of them are more often than not the coolest people you could ever hope to talk to.
Most SOV movies are horror - some weren't, like CAPTIVES (AKA MAMA'S HOME), VENUS FLY TRAP and LOST FAITH, as well as a few others. (This is speaking in terms of the 80's and early 90's - pretty much all genres now)
But..... either way - I love these things, wish other people were as fond as I am of them, they truly are entertaining.
Blood Cult, Wicked Games, 555, The Ripper, Scream Dream, Savage Vengeance, Zombie Bloodbath, Cannibal Campout, etc.
Fun stuff.
Well - mock away. ;D
