Tomorrow the 9th. 40 years since "1984" came out. What were your memories of it when it was first released? Did it have a big impact? I wasn't big into VH, until '86, but I remember it being big on the charts. "Jump " was huge. I had it on a compilation album called "Throbbin '84". I was 11 and still discovering music. I remember Dave being the poster boy in a few music mags I used to get here in Australia

I was 10 about to be 11 and I just remember jump. And how huge it was. it's an absolutely phenomenal album. I know some people rag on it. Cause the keyboards, but it's done in such a cool way that it doesn't bother me at all. Van Halen was firing on all cylinders at this point.

Was more like WTF kinda VH song was that. I don't really recall the album being blasted afterwards at my High School either, I was a Senior then. Album cover was cool. Only song I really ever cared for on it was Panama. Saw VH for first and only time on that Tour, Dave was wasted by 4th or 5th song, not a great show unfortunately. Hot for Teacher vid was popular.

1984 was mega huge and put VH on the map, not that they weren't popular before that. This album put them in the superstar stratosphere. Too bad it was the end of DLR, but what a way to go out. Jump, Panama, Hot for Teacher, and I'll Wait received massive airplay.

Even in Canada, you couldn't escape Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher.
I loved VH at this time, but given I was already a Sammy Hagar fan by this time - I didn't view Roth leaving as a bad thing, but Hagar being an improvement as he is far and away a better singer and typically I love bands with singers who have killer pipes.
1984 is absolutely a landmark album though for the 80's.

I don't think this really answers the OPs question though.
