According to Styx manager Charlie Brusco, the band hasn’t spoken to former singer Dennis DeYoung since he was fired in 1999. During an appearance on The Bob Lefsetz Podcast, Brusco detailed DeYoung’s ousting from the group. “Tommy (Shaw) and J.Y. (James Young) came to me and said, ‘We got a new album coming out. Dennis can't tour. We want to go out there without him,'” the manager recalled. “And I said, ‘Alright, if we do this – it could work, it might not work – but I'm not gonna go backwards. We're not gonna go do this for six months and then turn around and go back [to DeYoung].” According to Brusco, the rest of Styx could no longer handle DeYoung’s demanding ways. “Dennis likes to be in control of everything,” the manager matter-of-factly noted. Similar personality clashes had led to Styx’s two previous hiatuses, but in this case the band decided to simply fire their frontman. The job of telling DeYoung fell on Brusco. How Dennis DeYoung Was Fired From Styx “I called him on the phone and told him, and the reaction was not good,” the manager admitted, detailing his uncomfortable conversation with DeYoung. “And he said to me, ‘You know that no one will come to see them without me.’ And I go, ‘We'll see. We'll find out.'” DeYoung was replaced by Lawrence Gowan, and the band has continued touring and releasing new music ever since. According to Brusco, Styx’s ties to DeYoung remain completely severed. “I'm pretty sure of this: I don't think me, Tommy or J.Y. have ever spoken to Dennis since I let him go,” he noted. “I don't think the three of us have ever had a word with [DeYoung]. A good word or a bad word – nothing." lefsetz.com/wordpress/2024/04/04/charlie-brusco-this-weeks-podcast/

I may be in the minority here, but I think DeYoung was shafted. It was essentially his band.
I am not saying he wasn't a problem, but I think he should have been the one to carry on Styx with new guys in a legal capacity.
Having said that, I have liked the Styx albums without him.

In the time without Dennis, they've released 3 albums I think, if you count the covers record (which sucked).
Dennis has released two and both of his records are 20 times better than theirs.
Yeah, I go see Styx when they come to town, sometimes, but I saw Dennis solo in a tiny room, and it was a hundred times better than the Styx show too.

Wrote the vast majority of the songs that the band is known for. I really liked his solo albums too. Of course people have been critical of him basically hiring two guitarists that look and sound like Tommy and JY like KISS pretending Ace and Peter are still in the band, but come on - let's not pretend the Gowan hire wasn't their De Young wannabe.

This might be unpopular but STYX, CHICAGO, WARRANT, RATT, one of the 4 versions of LA GUNS, SKID ROW, ACCEPT, QUIET RIOT etc all are terrible IMO. Yes those Band's might have gotten a Great Vocalist but it's like a Karaoke/Tribute Band & have soldiered on and made new Album's and Toured but...
There have been only a Handful of Bands who have done well & succeeded (VAN HALEN, AC/DC, BLACK SABBATH, TSOL). The only reasoning for If it's necessary is If a Member has Passed Away & the Band want to continue, If a Lead Vocalist/Other Members are still alive they should work it out as Life is 2 short 4 petty bullshit. If its THAT bad then get each member 2 have their own tour buses (Hello MOTLEY CRUE, AEROSMITH).

I can't disagree if they have hired a vocalist to sound like a previous one vs. one that just does their own thing. For example I did like the Paul Shortino Quiet Riot album in 1988.

Ya there was a few good tunes on QR3 but I would have called/changed the Band name to "METAL HEALTH" or BangYoHeads" lol

So, fair play. That's cool of him. In all the back and forth squabbles in interviews or the Behind The Music episode, I just have sided with Dennis for the most part. His response to Behind The Music is interesting here. I can concede though that Dennis has probably not been honest about some things or even the fact that I would probably also think he is a controlling pain in the ass and I would want to fire him too, but he is the primary reason why Styx was successful and you just can't pretend otherwise. He was Styx. He should have the band name in my view with scabs pretending to be the other dudes in Styx in my view.
