i posted that i watched this on the "movies seen" thread, but i gotta get some opinions from those who have also seen it, 'cuz this flick is stuck in my head. now, i was able to watch 'death proof', 'planet terror' and the 'grindhouse' spinoff 'machete' practically standing on my head, even chuckling a good bit over the absurdity of 'em all.....but i just didn't get that same feeling with 'hobo', as much as i was hoping to. maybe i wasn't in the right frame of mind at the time, but it just seemed mean-spirited to a fault, making it too hard for me to revel in all the exaggerated carnage. in fact, i commented to my buddy that i felt like i was watching the horror movie equivalent of an on-camera rape for 90 minutes. i'll add more of my $.02 later, but i'll wait & see if anyone else watched it before pouring out all my opinions about it ;D

I have been meaning to see this - so are you saying I shouldn't. I did like Machete. i liked 'machete' too. but unlike 'machete' & the overwhelming majority of splatter flicks, 'hobo' gleefully tramples over just about any taboo you can think of, without any comic payoff to take the edge off. i don't want to spoil too much in case you do end up watching it, but let's just say flamethrowing a school bus full of kids doesn't exactly make me stand up and cheer.... 'hobo' certainly delivers in terms of body count & gore, even exceeding 'machete', but i dunno....it's just too heartless. it's like the director watched some troma flicks, but only gained wisdom with the violence & nothing else. i probably sound like a wuss, lol, but i assure you i've never felt the way i did until after watching 'hobo'....i bet i got you curious enough to the point where you'll watch it ASAP

I thought Hobo was brilliant. The director said he wanted to make an actual grind house movie, rather than a tribute, so it is played fairly straight but still funny and Haur Is great.

I thought Hobo was brilliant. The director said he wanted to make an actual grind house movie, rather than a tribute, so it is played fairly straight but still funny and Haur Is great. i guess the humor is in the eye of the beholder. i think the director tried getting some laughs, but IMO the dialogue was so weak-ass that it was hard to tell for sure. although i admit, the "when life gives you razor blades...." line was SO stupid i actually did chuckle at it. which was a good thing, 'cuz what happened next was pretty brutal, haha. rutger hauer was the main reason i stuck with the movie, but it seemed like the entire budget was spent on him, including the writing. i think another reason it fell flat for me was because there wasn't a single ounce of plausibility in the movie. yes, i know you're supposed to be in "suspension of disbelief" mode when watching something like this.....but unlike 'hobo', the other gorefests i've watched had at least a shred of plausibility to it, far beneath the surface it might be. let's face it, these villains wouldn't have lasted for more than two hours in real society, yet i'm supposed to accept that they have this entire city by the balls AND no one's gonna even consider moving away because of it? are these types of cities the norm in canada, which is why everyone chooses to stick around? LOL so... i guess for me, the gore factor gets an "A+", but the humor & believability factor gets an "D-"..... ironically, maybe if i saw this movie 20 years after the fact, i probably would've liked it better in a retro sort of way....but presently speaking, i don't completely hate it, but it's just too cold for me to want to watch over & over again....

I have Hobo on dvd. It's totally over the top and yeah.....there's not a lot of humor to balance the violence and abuse. I enjoyed Machete, but Hobo was a much meaner film. You feel like taking a shower after watching it. I've owned it for a while, not really sure if I like it. I'll have to take another look.

Well, Death Wish 3 is one of my all time favourite movies so that's where I'm coming from. 'death wish 3' was awesome! i haven't seen it in awhile, 'tho....i've been waiting for it to get a "proper" DVD release, 'cuz last i'd heard, the only available version was a cheap-looking fullscreen transfer. yeah, that was over-the-top as well (especially in the last 20-30 minutes), but it also had its share of LOL moments.....

I got the Death Wish boxed set, I think it's from the Netherlands. I also have a Death Wish 3 poster framed on the wall of my home bar room, alongside Cobra and Commando as the holy trinity of 80s action cheese.
