I have enjoyed many of his films, but Spielberg doesn't deserve even half of the praise he gets. In fact, as the book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls discusses - Spielberg was very much responsible for the downfall of Hollywood with the blockbuster and the end of the quality filmmaking of the 70's. I don't think he is alone in that, but he certainly helped pull the trigger in my opinion.
Plus I prefer Señor Spielbergo.

Speilberg is the most succesfull producer, director ever. Duel is an absolute classic as is Jaws. The firt three Indy's are incredible. SPR is a masterpiece. The Colour Purple should have won best picture. How about War Of The Worlds?? Epic movie. I have always said that no matter what he touches it turns to gold. Some of his flicks are sub-par but when he is on his game no one can match him. War Horse will be the best movie in the last ten years and will be nominated for best pic and probably win. By the way it was rumoured he co directed Revenge of The Sith. Not sure if it's true but it was the best of the Prequels.

He didn't co-direct any SW film. He made some suggestions for one duel sequence in Sith...(the lava splash onto that section of vain that breaks away and plummets into the lava river below). That's pretty much it. Lucas has regularly consulted with and taken notes from Coppola, Speilberg, and DePalma since the very first Star Wars film all the way thru Sith. Francis made suggestions for Sith as well...(that long dramatic "stare" across Coruscant before Anakin leaves the Council to help Mace).
I largely like Spielberg. It's true he's made a load of crap and I haven't liked anything of his since Munich. But his great films are truly GREAT (imo). I think including Private Ryan in his crap film list is ludicrous, but you're entitled. Most directors aspire to be that "terrible."
I'll take Scorsese on a film-by-film basis TODAY...comparing a couple old classic directors.

If anyone of these "names" are overrated, it's probably Coppola...although I really recommend his latest film, Tetro, if you've not seen it. The best he's done since I don't know when.

I like JAWS, ET, Indiana Jones and, Jurassic Park. I like him, I like a lot of his movies...but I don't think he's the best director ever. My opinion though.

LED, saw the preview to War Horse in theatres. Looks cool. Very emotional.
As for Spielberg, no one can deliver brilliance all the time. Even the best actors have dud movies. It happens.

Looks good definitely. Hopefully he doesn't turn the sap meter on too high. He's great with big setpieces, and nothing is begging to be made more than a great WWI film with some good trench warfare, that shit is scary as fuck. Love the main setpieces in Saving Private Ryan (sniper, DDay), shame the rest of the movie blew chunks. Didn't you enjoy Ted Dansen's cameo?

I find his films overly schmaltzy..he lures the viewer into thinking they've had an emotional experience by use of music, the right angles and various other tricks. His films often lack genuine emotional depth. Having said that...he has made some of my favourite films.

I've still not seen War Horse and I'm really not in any hurry to do so, although I try to see every BP nominee before the awards...and it'll likely be nominated.
