While I am sure The Dark Knight Rises will be the better film ultimately, do you think it will surpass the third highest grossing movie of all time?

No. I'm stunned by how well The Avengers has done and I don't think Batman will have the type of performance (or hype) that it had last time with Ledger.

There was so much hype for The Dark Knight even before Ledger's death that once he died everything went into overdrive. I've never seen that much media hype for a movie. Not even Titanic or Avatar.
I suspect that The Dark Knight Rises will do around $400 Million, give or take about $25 million.
And it will not be as entertaining as The Avengers.

It will come pretty damn close, I think.

It's not going to be the third biggest grossing movie in the world. I know Joss whedon wasn't expecting that (look at how his previous films have all performed. Terrible right?) for the avengers and I know Nolan isn't expecting it for DKR

I wasn't a huge fan of The Dark Knight. It had too many plot holes for a movie that was supposedly this great game changer for Comic Book Superhero movies. It was supposedly the most realistic superhero movie ever, but it was just as ridiculous as all the rest, just in different ways.
Like I said, I like it (and I own it), but I'm not a huge fan.
I'll still likely go see TDKR when it comes out. I loved Batman Begins.
