Can we start with Citizen Kane?
What's your list - and remember this isn't popular movies like The Hangover or whatever, but movies that have won Oscars and critics love and are usually found on the best movie ever lists.

citizen kane can't be taken enough, so i'm including it again. oh, it's a masterpiece alright, but more like a "master piece" ;D
i noticed 'brazil' on LED's list on another thread. did that win any awards? 'cuz i tried to enjoy it, but it mostly bored me to tears (although de niro's brief appearances were sorta OK).
'the royal tenenbaums' gets alot of critical love, but man, that was brutal to sit through. too bad, 'cuz i actually enjoyed wes anderson's 'bottle rocket' and 'life aquatic'....
i'm gonna catch shit, but i had a tough time getting through 'the godfather' & have no plans on watching it again. yes, there were a few memorable moments, but overall it crawled at a snail's pace. i'll catch even MORE shit when i say i actually tolerated part 3, lol....
'blair witch project': people actually liked this pile of shit? i'm not even gonna waste my time talking about it.
more when i can remember....

Forrest fucking Gump. Titanic. Obviously a lot of shitty movies have won Oscars, a piece of shit like Shakespear In Love for instance. Fuck, How Green Was My Valley beat Citizen Kane, LOL That piece of shit Crash, etc. But rightly so those movies have been all but forgotten. Fuck you both Citizen Kane is a goddamned masterpiece. Forrest Gump is a great choice.

Most of the films by Wes Anderson. Bottle Rocket and Rushmore are brilliant. I like Rushmore. Have no interest in MOST of his films. I'm shocked Isis didn't pick Rocky.

yeah, you do strike me as a 'blair witch project' fan Ok, yes, that was a complete pile of shit. But Godfather? 3 being the one you liked? LOL well, "tolerated" and "liked" are not exactly the same thing. i recognize part 1 as the "better" movie, but i just got tired of the over-romanticizing & wish they knocked an hour off the movie's running time instead....

Oh now you like him. LOL, I always liked Erik. I was one of his biggest defenders here! I may not agree with him politically in most cases but always been a fan of his posting... My apologies. It's hard to wade through the soup of discontent around here sometimes.

The godfather and Raging Bull were rather dull What's dull about extreme violence and great acting? I remember the first time I watched The Godfather. I thought it was too slow - very good, but too slow. Keep in mind that this came after watching Goodfellas about 10 times. Upon second viewing I absolutely loved The Godfather. It may not have been what I expected the first time out, but it is a great movie.

I avoided The Godfather for years. Didn't see it until the very LATE 80s. Once I saw the first two I realized what all the fuss was about.

Music applies to this logic. B5Erik is not a fan of soft music. He wants it to RAWWKKK!!!! Art is art. Whether in music or in film. HONESTLY, it is good to see that you are finally coming to... Nice to see that you appreciate multiple styles of art... You actually surprised yourself with the second viewing... Not shooting you down... Just very proud of you for realizing that being different is good... And, don't bring up that you listen to jazz for an excuse...

Look, The Godfather IS a slow film, but that's how the epics were made in the old days, and Godfather is very much a sendup to the type of films Coppola grew up loving. It's excellent, just the nuance is mostly lost on my generation. After all, a 10 minute scene of Al Pacino reflecting would wind up on a cutting room floor if this movie was made 2012. I'm so glad it was made when it was.

Upon second viewing I absolutely loved The Godfather. It may not have been what I expected the first time out, but it is a great movie. You thought it was too slow but, very good? Yeah. I could easily recognize the tremendous performances in the movie, and the great script. At the time I wasn't thrilled with the editing. Again, for me the modern gangster movie was Goodfellas. A hyperkinetic movie if there ever was one. Watching The Godfather after watching Goodfellas as many times as I did was quite a shock. It was a totally different thing - and I didn't expect that. Absolutely. Knowing what to expect with my second viewing I was able to enjoy it and appreciate it without skewed preconceptions that weren't met (as with the first viewing). I was able to evaluate it based on it's own merits, and I found that my initial reaction was half right. Great acting, great script - and great direction, too! The Godfather is art, damned good art at that! Goodfellas is art, too, but in a completely different style. They're both great.

Goodfellas was made as a more contemporary film, Godfather was copolla's homage to the epic/gangster films from the past (such as the original scarface.) The pacing is a result of wanting to lend gravity to the situations present. It's something MOST people my age don't appreciate because we've been bombarded with MTV-editing style media and so few modern classics with that style of pacing.
Both films are however as Erik points out, fantastic in their own rights.

But even the classic gangster films from the 30's were faster paced than The Godfather, and I've watched a lot of them over the years. The Godfather is really it's own thing - a pretty amazing thing, really... But you're right, most people under 40 have developed cinematic ADD because of all the hyperkinetic editing used so commonly over the last 15 years...

I should have specified FOREIGN epics. Also when I did the epic/gang split I meant he was inspired by two different sources, epic films and gangster films.
