In the last 10 years or so (and some movies even beyond that), there has been a new trend where movies will just start after the studio logos - no credits, no titles.
I actually prefer this, but I have heard some people complain that they need a proper start to the movie as if they need confirmation of what they are watching or they think the DVD they rented or bought is missing the opening scene with the credits.
What is your position on this?

I wouldn't have thought it mattered. You would be surprised what people complain about.

You would be surprised what people complain about. But placement of credits? I guess some people are anal about these things. That's OK. It has more to do with being thrown into the story with no proper opening. Or so the complainers have said.

Sometimes it's perfect, like Pulp Fiction. Just jumps right into a scene. None of the Star Wars films have them either and I'm just fine with that too.

It totally depends on how you use that space. Horror films can effectively fuse music and opening credits quite well at times.

It totally depends on how you use that space. This. It'll just depend on the movie. Either way, not fussed. This does remind me of the film Tropic Thunder - they had all these spoof movie trailers for the 'actors' that feature in the film - so we all thought 'oh, another coming attraction'. Initially the crowd seemed confused for a moment but quickly realised what was going on.

I'm fine with it. Although some opening title/credits sequences can be fairly entertaining. What I don't like is how ridiculously long and inclusive end credits have become. Anyone and everyone who has anything to do with the movie, no matter how small or inconsequential, gets a credit. The freaking caterer (including the catering chef) gets a credit! That's just stupid. Credits have gone from a couple minutes to 10 or 12 minutes because of that. When I want to watch my hidden scene in the theater I don't want to have to wait that long to see it.

Star Wars has opening titles - it says Star Wars with the crawl. I am talking about movies that don't even mention the title. Studio logo and then boom the story starts like Collateral for example.

Again, I know what movie I'm seeing. Unless I'm in the wrong theater, why do I care?

But look at all that screen that has gone to waste!

Letterbox didn't bother me, widescreen doesn't bother me. Paying more for HD does, since I can't tell the difference (shitty eyes)
