As John said, in the South this kind of thinking is pretty common.
It also seems like there is a prevailing belief in the conservative circles that the crisis in Greece and banking problems in a few other countries means that ALL European countries are also in crisis and like this woman, when you point out that most of European countries are actually doing rather well they refuse to hear it (this is also the reaction you get when you correct their misinformation about health care outside of the U.S)
It's maddening trying to have a conversation with someone who refuses to look at facts.
