Hank Williams is more than ready for some political football.
The country singing star and voice of the Monday Night Football theme song, Williams appeared on "Fox and Friends" this morning to talk politics via satellite hookup. He got right into it, telling the hosts that he didn't like any of the candidates in the GOP primary for President, and that John Boehner's golf game with Barack Obama was a major mistake.
"That would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu. Not hardly. In the shape this country is in?
When Brian Kilmeade said that he didn't understand the analogy, Williams was non-plussed. "I'm glad you don't brother, because a lot of people do. They're the enemy... Obama! And Biden! Are you kidding? The Three Stooges."
And while it was suggested that the President and Vice President were only two people, falling short of the trio he described, Williams just moved on to talking about the current race.
"The one that makes the most sense is Herman Cain," he said, finally revealed which candidate he supported. Back in 2008, Williams ignited a controversy when, campaigning for John McCain, he said to an audience in Colorado, "Join me now in our national--you know, that song that, uh, Mr. Obama's not real crazy about, we're singing it right now."
Williams says he plans a run for Senate in Tennessee in 2012 as a Republican.

Sigh. I can't figure out what happened to ol' Bocephus.
Almost all of his albums have always had at least one political song, so that much is nothing new...but the crazy hard-right stance he's displayed over the past decade or so kinda is. On his late-70s/early-80s albums his political songs often stood up for what most would consider to be pretty liberal issues, and he called out Reagan on more than one occasion.
Somewhere along the line he went from pretty damn good country artist who was blazing his own trail to ridiculous self-parody, so I guess it figures that his politics now mirror that self-parody too more than the guy whose music and stance I used to kinda respect.

While I'm thinking of it, this reminds me of another situation where a seemingly-liberalish country artist did a complete 360 in more recent years - Charlie Daniels.
Take a look at some of his '70s work - particularly a song like "Uneasy Rider" where he escapes a beating from rednecks by turning them against each other, convincing them that one of their own is a "Commie hippie-type pinko fag" - and compare those sentiments against his current status as a Tea Party crusader. Now he seems more like one of those rednecks who would have been beating up their former friend for liberal viewpoints than a lib turning their own rhetoric against them.
I don't know what it says about the country music audience exactly, but it sure seems like the only way for these now-older, once-more-open-minded artists to stay relevant is by morphing into right-wing wackjobs.

So it seems Hank's comments have gotten him fired from Monday Night Football (or at least they pulled the song last night).
I dunno, not crazy about that, even if he did say stupid shit. Wrong when they did it to the Dixie Chicks, wrong when they do it to Hank, even if they are on opposite sides of the political spectrum.
