There are certain directors that I wish would stick to a certain genre, because that's what they are best at in my opinion. I have never been a fan of Tarantino's work beyond Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown in addition to his script for True Romance. I would just prefer that he make crime films over and over again as opposed to Kill Bill, Basterds and Death Proof.
Now while I loved The Insider, I would also prefer Michael Mann to make crime films like Thief, Manhunter, Heat and Collateral. But he really needs to get his game back - because Miami Vice and Public Enemies were terrible.
Anyone else have a director they wished stayed in a certain genre?

Kevin Smith...dick and fart comedy. Quit making rom-coms and trying to be a "better" director. He also needs to stick with his view-askew characters too. Whenever he branches out he falls on his face. Not saying all of those films are great either, but it's what he does best. You're not a comic book director, you're not a horror director...you write funny pop culture reference dialogue. Stick with that and the characters you created.
Scorsese makes great gangster films. He's capable of more, but I think it's what he does best....street drama.
I disagree about Tarantino. He could make a film adaptation of the phone book and I'd probably like it, but I'm biased too. Case in point, I had fucking ZERO interest in the kung fu genre and totally skipped the Kill Bills exactly for that reason. When they came out on DVD I rented the first on a total lark and was blown away. The second one was even better. After that I swore to myself I'd never skip a Tarantino (solo...I dislike his collaborations) film again. Even Basterds seemed like an odd film for him to be making and I loved that one too. I'm just constantly impressed by the man's feature films....but I can see where others aren't. I trust this guy to make a good film no matter what genre he touches on.

Did you see Cop Out - was it as bad as people said?

Actually speaking about Kevin Smith again - I just watched his Too Fat For 40 Q&A and was actually excited this time around - because he swore that this time he was going to take as many questions as possible and not give so many long winded answers as he has done in his previous DVD's.
So what happened? 1 question was asked. What was it like to work with Bruce Willis. I am not kidding when I say this - it took him 2 hours to answer this one question. He didn't even start talking about working with Bruce Willis until an hour and half in.
I couldnt believe it. I just can't watch these anymore. The first two were good, but the guy seriously can't answer a quetion without talking about everything under the sun before he gives the answer to the actual question. Pisses me off.

i guess i'm in the minority when i say tarantino's movies do nothing for me. i admit i liked 'reservoir dogs' & 'pulp fiction' years ago, but neither has aged well for me. in fact, 'dogs' just downright annoys me now.....the amount of exposition coming out of harvey keitel's mouth sounds like he's doubling as a live-action author. i've said it elsewhere, but i get the impression tarantino has a "mad libs"-type master script he uses for every movie, and he just plugs different words & names into the blanks. and 'death proof' can't hold a candle to 'planet terror' or any of the 'grindhouse' spin-offs.....

I'm actually in the tiny minority that thinks Jackie Brown is the best thing he's done. I really like Reservoir Dogs, but you're right about the exposition, still, not a lot of fat in the movie. Pulp Fiction I love a lot of and there's a lot I find terribly amateurish and completely unneccessary. Whole chunks and characters could be removed completely without anyone being the wiser. Death Proof is a horrible piece of shit on any level, it's almost not fair to bring it up! I love Jackie Brown! That's probably my favorite of his films too.

I love all he's done solo (meaning non-collaborative). I don't like the scripts he wrote for films he didn't make, I don't like when he made films or segments of films with other directors, etc....I just like the movies that are HIS. It's hard for me to pick a favorite, but I suppose it would be Pulp Fiction. I think it's perfect just as it is. I wouldn't change much in any of his films.

Coppola did a fine film IMO with Tetro. Seen it? Haven't seen that one, Youth Without Youth was bloody awful though! Twixt sounds kinda interesting... Give Tetro a spin. Stylish...well made...gorgeous photography.
