Name your top 20 best drummers - if you want to exceed 20, that's fine.

Does ranking also indicate drum ability? In other words, is Phil Collins a better drummer than John Bonham or just your preference. A mixture of both. My personal #1 would be Bruford but Palmer is clearly technically superior to... anyone. And Phil Collins is so much better than Bonham it isn't funny. He was pretty fucking terrible playing with Led Zeppelin ironically.

Queen is my favorite band (obviously). However, as much as I love Roger's voice and the few songs he wrote in the band - his drumming, while obviously great at it - never did much for me. And I never see anyone talk about his playing, really. Then again, nobody talks much about drummers outside of Bonham, Peart, etc. You won't hear Joey Kramer, Bill Ward, Peter Criss, Charlie Watts, etc. There's 3-5 truly recognized great ones that everyone heaps praise on and the rest are not talked about, perhaps because people just don't care to discuss drummers? I normally see people talk about 50 greatest guitarists or singers than drummers.

Buddy RichAfter that it doesn't really matter. OK, there are and have been a ton of great drummers, but I haven't heard all of them - Carl Palmer, for example, hasn't really played in bands that I particularly like, so I'm not familiar with his work. But if LED says he's great, then I have zero doubt that he is. Some of my favorites... Tommy Aldridge Eric Singer (1986-2000) Vinnie Appice Dave Alford Nicko McBrain Clive Burr Simon Phillips Barriemore Barlow (Who I always liked from the first Yngwie album, but his work with Tull is really outstanding.) Jeff Martin Bobby Rondinelli Stewart Copeland (I'm not a big fan of the Police, but he's a great drummer.) Jason Bonham John Bonham Kenny Aronoff Ian Paice Brian Downey That's just off the top of my head, but that's a pretty good list.

One fellow not on anyone's list so far who is otherwise a bit off the radar is Matt Chamberlain.

But if LED says he's great, then I have zero doubt that he is. I went with rock drummers, otherwise jazz guys would have made up half the list with Buddy tops of course. Buddy Rich's favorite rock drummer you ask? Carl Palmer. About the only rock drummer he had anything nice to say about. They actually ended up extremely close friends. Palmer worshipped him. As he should have. Buddy was on a level all his own. I was lucky enough to see Buddy Rich live at least 3 times, but I can't remember the 70's shows, so I don't know if it was once or twice. I got to say, "Hi," and shake his hand before a Disneyland gig around 1984 or so. I wish I had a video camera back then - those shows were phenomenal. (The best I saw was at the San Diego Zoo in their amphitheater in June of 1983 - Buddy played to a packed house and he and his band played a blistering set.)

I've always tried Googling any discussion on Taylor's drumming only to come out with little to no results. I can find discussion on Criss or Ward and a couple others. I think Taylor is an overlooked drummer. Perhaps it was that the average Joe couldn't distinguish any style he had.
Even on the Queen boards he's under-discussed. I don't think drumming is that discussed though.
I don't know if Kramer could play like Criss, though. Then again seeing Kramer's solos actually sound a lot like Criss in a way.
Your opinion on Criss' playing aside - it's hard to dismiss his influence. If not for his playing but just by being in such a huge band so by default causing influence.

I don't really know who any of them are. I was just trying to seduce you. But I do enjoy Phil Collins' Greatest Hits album. I love his Disney work. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! "But Seriously....." Thanks dude. Drums make the music for me and those drummers above REALLY make the music mean something to me.

Fired from both Journey and Jefferson Starship for being a pedo. Cunt. I looked on Google and couldn't see anything about that. Plus he was the drummer on the Whitesnake 1987 album. I assume if he was a pedophile - no one would hire him.

Seems to be more of an allegedly thing as opposed to confirmed from some of what I read in those links. Explains why he still had a career.

Apologies, HM. I didn't read your full list.
I've seen Burrows live twice now and he's perhaps the only drummer I've witnessed in concert who can reproduce the same drum sound on stage as in the studio.

I honestly have difficulty ranking musicians, oftentimes. So, I'll just list in no particular order, which is unusual for me to do.
Bill Ward Ringo Starr Joey Kramer Peter Criss Nick Mason John Bonham Keith Moon Roger Taylor Eric Singer Mick Tucker Cozy Powell Neil Peart Ian Paice Alex Van Halen Bill Bruford Ginger Baker

Why do you have a difficulty ranking musicians? It's who you think is the best or most talented or just who you think kicks ass.

Why do you have a difficulty ranking musicians? It's who you think is the best or most talented or just who you think kicks ass. I have no issue naming all the drummers I love or guitarists and so forth. I can list every one of them, easily. I just have a hard time determining which ones I like more or less and putting them in an order of preference. Some are apples and oranges so it's hard to compare and say "I like this guy better than this guy" because some of them are incomparable. All these drummers have a variation of proficiency combined with style/feel/power - just what degree and variations is the question so I have a hard time ranking them. I love them all relatively equally, for varying reasons.

When was the first time you saw Tea Party? Not until the reunion tour three years ago, despite them being huge in Australia and touring here constantly when I was a student. I took a friend with me and converted her on the spot. Blasting Fire In The Head as I type this. Thank you, iTunes .
