I get the Sykes comparison, but there is one HUGE difference - Whitesnake '87. That is a feather in Sykes' cap that Vinnie has nothing similar. At 8X platinum, it would take oodles of Sphinx math and record company fudging albums to platinum to get Vinnie even to half of that. In addition, Sykes has writing credits on Still of the Night and Is This Love? which are evergreen tracks. He could've squandered everything he ever earned, and still receive nice annual income from those alone. Vinnie never wrote a song nearly as successful, and what little royalties his songs do generate, go to Gene and Paul, as a settlement for Vinnie's endless lost lawsuits. So Sykes is a mess, but he's basically a recluse. He's not gouging gullible fans and creating false narratives about his legend. And if memory serves, he has managed to get some properly produced tracks on YouTube. Look, the music business is vicious, and I don't condone Gene and Paul's actions. But Vinnie makes it impossible to feel sympathy toward. And thanks for the nice words on the videos! I actually am recording another EP/album in 2024 and one song I am developing is a shred song; well to me it is. It's 160 BPM, which is warm-up speed for John Petrucci. I've done some guitar gear vids but that crowd can be very toxic. So I've been apprehensive about doing more. Right now I'm doing a personal study of melody, which is what led me to these jazz tunes. I'm considering doing a Ladies of the 80's series, kind of in the vein of Neal Schon's Voice album; basically doing instrumental versions of pop songs. Right now I have rough sketches for Crazy for You (Madonna), Eternal Flame (Bangles), I Get Weak (Belinda Carlisle), All Through the Night (Cyndi Lauper). But I'm undecided. I don't want to get sidetracked from my own album. I've also considered doing an instructional book, but that would barely be a breakeven proposition. When I first started doing YouTube Shorts, I hadn't figured out how to make them longer than 15 seconds. This is a picking exercise I give students, and would include in a book. I preach accuracy, so there is no distortion, delay, etc. This could kinda be shred, if it were distorted. It is musical, and I have students play it 80-100 BPM, focusing on accuracy. I did it at 140 BPM to get it under 15 seconds. And yes, I do my version of shredding on the Led Paul!

Oh for sure there is that major difference between Sykes and Vincent, but you suggested if Vinnie was truly talented - why doesn't he have a career or anyone that wants to with him. I provided an example of someone I know you think is very talented - you recently praised the second Blue Murder album too and Sykes doesn't have a career and nobody wants to work with him either because of his personality and other issues. Sykes and Vincent are very similar in THAT capacity of burning bridges and pissing people off that they both have lost opportunities and the phone is actually ringing less now for Sykes than it is for Vinnie what with this Vinnie shows he does. Cool video. Would like to hear more. Can you post private videos that we can see - but that are not public if you don't want any gear head backlash? Glad to hear you are working on new music. Maybe you can do a Freewheeler theme song.

I've said plenty of times RMB is a guilty pleasure...then again there are very few KISS tunes before COS that I don't care for. If I'm not mistaken, I think KO sorta likes it even. Only reason he gives you shit about it is because he knows you hate it...and there's that funny YT video he likes to go back to with the shtick that it's you. GC has never really proven otherwise. I mean he recently let loose his house is painted Vinnie Vincent pink. Next we'll discover he's offered Bruce an internship as remote scientific research consultant for Canada's coastline water quality minus fish milt and any foreseeable Homeless relocation movement with Slow's FAQ All Stars handling any related media promo jingles. He also desires to be a Jollibee franchisee with MTS handling greeter duties. He's probably in some way involved with the Avatars too and he absolutely believes he gets the better of Stretch Armstrong. He's likely also shared fresh squeezed OJ with Still Alive. Think about it. Who have you been talking to? I feel like I am being stalked.

Quality? OK. Creatures of the Night was a 30/30/30 record. 30% killer. 30% filler. 30% chiller. Lick it Up was a 30/30/390 record. 30% killer. 30% filler. 30% chiller. So, it's not like he elevated them to some godlike level. He got them back to where they were...and I'm being generous on LIU honestly. I don't know what to tell you, except it's KISS. Every album has a lot of filler. They have NEVER made a truly great album from front to back that is competitive with what other bands were doing. Even the debut while having a bunch of songs that became KISS classics - the versions are far better on Alive and there is almost no point in listening to the debut - no energy, production is bad, etc. I might make an exception for Hotter Than Hell, but even then KISS couldn't get it right and the production was literally botched ruining any chance that the album might have been viewed as a landmark 70's album. Destroyer is viewed as their best album of the 70's. It is what it is. It is the only album that will get any recognition outside of KISS sheep. As we move into the 80's, Creatures and LIU are viewed as their best. I would say even by the band themselves, since they have since been critical of their 80's output. Now fair enough if those two albums make your overrated list as Destroyer does for many KISS fans - that is something else entirely, but those two albums would be the objective answer you should be reluctantly giving when you go on a game show to win millions and are asked to name the only two albums outside of the original band that are KISS' best/have any level of respect for a band like KISS. To pick any other two albums even if you prefer them would be moronic in terms of a money bet. Proudly shouting that Animalize and Asylum or Crazy Nights and HITS are KISS' landmark 80's albums would just be silly and you would be going home with an awful consolation prize. Honestly I LOVE The Elder and go back to it far more than Creatures and LIU these days, but I understand why it is hated and despite my subjective view, I wouldn't answer with The Elder simply because of that subjective view. It is wrong objectively as a landmark 80's KISS album. I know that. Completely true. Most of their albums are 30/30/30 albums. So, Vinnie didn't do anything for them they didn't do without them. And if I'm going to get someone into Kiss, I'm picking Alive! and Unplugged.

That is just the objective reality of their discography even if one prefers other albums. That is the difference. Again same as Destroyer. Overrated to some, still has some filler, some fans prefer Rock And Roll Over or Love Gun, but Destroyer is the correct answer objectively for what is their best album when talking about their discography without the KISS fanboy hat on. Ultimately it is Destroyer, Alive and Creatures. KISS didn't have to really bother releasing anything else as those 3 albums have gotten the most attention as being their best outside of the KISS bubble considering the large amount of studio albums they have and the many they shouldn't have released and that includes The Elder, which I love. But I can be objective in that way. I have never thought giving live albums to win people over is a good idea - especially an unplugged album. Unless you know they just love live albums in general. Better to make a compilation of studio songs that you think they would dig based on what you know of their musical tastes and preferences. For example if you know they don't like pop music, you are not going to give them Unmasked songs, etc. But if it has worked for you, then great.

Sykes simply doesn't need the money, so he doesn't need a career. Same with Warren DeMartini. That's why they aren't bilking die hard fans to fly to Nashville to hang out with them, charging exorbitant fees to join a Facebook page, or any of Vinnie's other snake oil salesman tactics. And that's what rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Look, the music business chews people up and spits them out. I would sympathize with Vinnie, but I will not enable him, by going along with his ploys. Yes, I can do a theme song! That'd be fun. I actually just shot a 30 second video for this thread. Got to go see the sisters and nephew, but I'll put it up, private or otherwise.

Let's get someone else. That is pretty revealing about what it is like to have to deal with John Sykes. Awesome. Happy New Year!

Well it's like the Cyndi Lauper song (albeit a cover) stated, "Money Changes Everything." Tony Franklin told Full In Bloom that the whole grunge thing devastated Sykes. Him going back to making what rock bands make know, after striking gold, probably saddened him. He used to get royalty checks far greater than what slugging it out in clubs for months with Winery Dogs would earn him. As I suggested in the antidepressants thread, the male brain changes with age. I can understand him throwing in the towel, especially since financially he can. In the spirit of this thread, I did this in literally the amount of time it takes to watch - about 30 seconds. I can certainly polish it up, but it's not hard at all. I used the chords to WHitesnake's Is This Love, at a different tempo. I played it in my looper and threw a makeshift 'shreddy' for me at least, solo on top. The first run is reminiscent of Sykes' run in Still of the Night, and second is similar to the opening to Racer X's Scit Scat Wah.

The rest of the world doesn't give a fuck about KISS. They barely have any real hits. They have released far more shit than actually good songs or albums. The albums haven't sold anything close to what KISS claim. The critics were ALWAYS right about KISS outside of longevity. KISS was always show over substance and the KISS Army deserved to be mocked for liking KISS. We are essentially losers for getting into this fucking lame band. Having said that, Destroyer, Alive, Creatures and 3 or 4 other albums are the highlight of this band covering different eras and typically the most praised. This is undeniable. Hard rock fans in general absolutely do know those albums. The general public on the other hand couldn't name 5 KISS songs with a gun to their head - never mind naming albums, so that kind of moot. Even very recent KISS rankings have Creatures at number two on one KISS album ranking and number 5 on another. You are never going to see Creatures below 10 MAX on any KISS ranking of 20 albums. LIU also places higher in both against Animalize, but there are kooky choices on both as well. loudwire.com/kiss-albums-ranked/ultimateclassicrock.com/kiss-albums-ranked/

The thing about Sykes though - he wanted to do the band with Portnoy/Sheehan. They fired him essentially, so it seems he was looking to get back out there again.

Only a select few are worthy enough to hear his new music...after they pay hundreds. And that's another ridiculous part of this train wreck. Even in the old paradigm, fans heard music for free - FM radio, MTV. The idea was to entice the listener to purchase more. At this stage all the posts, videos, etc. promising what's coming aren't even funny. It's now beyond the boy who cried wolf. The whole thing takes on a flat-earth-society vibe, in that a very small number of people go to his events and carry on as if they witnessed the Second Coming. Creaturesfest comes along with the promise that the truth will finally be revealed. But then the same horses--t happens. Vinnie changes his mind, attempts to confiscate cameras, but a few managed to film the Unidentified Fretting Object. And the evidence was harrowing; it was the most un-musical, un-listenable playing imaginable. And the flat-earthers carry on, unchanged. It would take two clicks of his thumbs to document 15 seconds of the seven hours a day he practices.

Only a select few are worthy enough to hear his new music...after they pay hundreds. And that's another ridiculous part of this train wreck. Even in the old paradigm, fans heard music for free - FM radio, MTV. The idea was to entice the listener to purchase more. The gross numbers would look ok, but that's assuming everyone in attendance paid; which we don't know. And we don't know the overhead for studio rent, transportation, insurance, etc. And besides, how long ago was the last one? Average that out over time and it's nothing spectacular. I bet Sykes is making more walking to his mailbox!

I bet Sykes is making more walking to his mailbox! Yes, but he charges so much and does a bunch of these that he has to do pretty good by his standards anyway. You can't even use his forum now without paying 200 bucks, so no one is getting into an Vinnie event without having paid in advance. I would have to assume he wouldn't do them if he wasn't getting a nice pay day where he can afford some steaks and lobster for a little while and it wasn't cost prohibitive to put on. Basically he can count on Vinnie die hards to finance his life a couple of times a year.

I still don't see how a couple of times a year on the tiny scale he does them is all that profitable.
Do you ever lurk at Sludge? Look at Stevie. He gets Tuff booked in Peru, Australia, on cruises, etc.
I don't know that I Hate Kissing You Goodbye was that much bigger of a hit than Love Kills. But Stevie does so much more owning the name Tuff than Vinnie does with VVI.
When Vinnie resurfaced six years ago, most forgave him and were pulling for him. But he's managed to burn even more bridges and devalue his name even more.
It's time to stop making excuses for him.

You make a nice bunch of cash over a weekend or whatever with the admission fee and merch sold. It's not the kind of money to change anyone's life, but neither is playing on a cruise. It's a nice pay day - some much better than others. It doesn't have to make sense to you, but Vinnie has his die hards and they will pay him. Honestly I would be doing the same thing.

It's like that clip of Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School, schooling his business professor. We used to share it with Nibbler when he gushed over Kiss' gross earnings.
People assume 30 people paid $500 and think Vinnie netted $15K. It doesn't work that way. If he pocketed 1/3 after room rental, backline rental, transportation, insurance, promotion, taxes (which can get complicated on social security), he did ok. And the clips I've seen had nowhere near 30 attendees.
But that's pointless to debate - we simply don't have numbers.
I just wonder why you don't hold Vinnie to the same standard as Kiss when it comes to recording new music. You praise artists who still write and record simply because they love doing it.
I'm cool with that.
But what about the countless social media posts of Vinnie sitting behind some giant mixing console, promising some fictitious album, posing with guitars, producers, etc.? Plus, promising everyone who ordered a box set decades ago would get two.
That was six years ago - the amount of time between the Kiss debut and Unmasked.
Yet we don't even have a 15 second clip, that with modern technology, would take 15 seconds to make.
I have more respect for Gene for being honest and saying he won't write/record. Vinnie promises the moon, poses in a big studio holding a guitar, yet can't hit a button on his phone.
He's charlatan.

If he or even I for that matter was putting on these conventions and at the end of it all was left with an amount of money that didn't make it worth doing continually - we both wouldn't do it. Vinnie is clearing an amount of money worth it for him. Maybe not for you. But he is making a few thousand over 48 hours with admission fees and merch. Not a bad way to start your next week. I am not making excuses for him, but there is a reason why conventions are popular in general. You can make good money for minimal effort and reasonable expense to put it on. I can only assume since this rich dude has said he has heard the album - that one actually does exist. I doubt he would lie for him. Now having said that, it doesn't mean the album is actually good - just more of the same VVI style shredding shit, but if this guy digs that stuff, well then apparently he is happy. In a weird way, I can actually relate to Vinnie or any music artist/author/filmmaker for that matter that has work done - but just isn't prepared to release it YET or is taking many years to complete a new project from their last one. Assuming Vinnie really has a new album or is working on one of course. If I am not ready yet, I am not going to release a 15 second clip because it is easy to do. It has to be perfect in my mind first before I allow it to get public reaction.

That's not an unreasonable assumption. $5,000/year to keep the house cool, warm, and full of running water (etc). $5,000/year to feed and clothe himself. That's 3 or 4 events a year and he'll pull in $10K.

I don't believe any of that. And besides, lots of artists who actually are, still release music.
There's a famous quote that recordings are never finished; they are abandoned.
Rarely does anyone record anything that they are completely pleased with; and I can one-up anyone when it comes to OCD and perfectionism. It's not easy, but it's part of the process.
Believe me - I have torn and tattered spiral notebooks of endless adjustments to the five song EP I released last year. Yes, there were 5 songs that made the cut, and others that didn't. Some songs took 30 mixes to get right. Do you want me to share the over 300 privatized videos I have of myself jumping rope, that I only uploaded to YouTube so I can watch in slow motion and pick apart all the (mostly imaginary) mistakes I'm making? Do you know the first thing I did when I posted that short clip a couple of days ago was listen to it at 50% tempo so I could hear my picking mistakes?
I fight perfectionism every minute of every day. I mostly hate it. But I accept it, and I move on, realizing that what I put out represents an honest effort and is a snapshot of where I was at that given time. Most musicians would say the same thing.
Vinnie posing with that giant mixer is idiotic. I'll share a pic of the lowly 12 channel mixer I work with. What does he need that for? He absolutely has delusions of grandeur.
And that's the issue behind all of this. There is a tiny part of Vinnie's brain that knows he's delusional. And he fears the truth. That's why he insists on controlling the narrative - secretive meetings, absolutely no filming because then the truth is out there, no songs, etc. Even the incoherent Ace Frehley has a professionally recorded song and video from an upcoming album.
Would you accept Gene posing in front of a giant mixer and never releasing music?

If memory serves, that broken down house behind the fence with the turd in the shower got foreclosed. He also has bankruptcies, though I don't know how recent. Add to that the judgments against him that Gene and Paul have, and I don't see how he owns a home, after bankruptcies, foreclosures, and judgments. It's possible a parent died and left him a place, and inheritance may be covered by homestead. I don't know. There are also issues with how much he can earn while receiving social security. I know nothing about that, either. I just don't see these gatherings - which are fewer and less attended with each passing year - as some great cash cow. Especially when for a guy that thinks he's a musical genius, becomes such a laughingstock at Sludge with the crowd he attracts. I don't pass judgment - but that's just how it is. The posing behind the giant mixer is phonier than anything Paul or Gene have ever done. Plug a guitar in and hit record - a ten year old can do it!

Musical genius? No. Perfectionist? Maybe. He seemed pretty damn insistent on VVI being exactly how he wanted it to be. Listening to no one and alienating everyone in the process. Even someone with minimal talent can still be obsessed with THEIR creative process and a perfectionist. Even if the end result isn't good to most people. Again, I can relate because I am that way even with day to day shit in my life. So I can only image how I would be if I was working on a Hey Man solo album. I wouldn't share 5 seconds with the world until I was 1000% happy with it. So maybe Vinnie and I share a mental issue in that regard. When I was working on my movie project - we had someone come in to do a rewrite because they were a name in Canada and I liked his work. I was NOT fucking happy at all with it, but everyone else on the team were fine with it and figured sure it may not be exactly how we envision the film, but at least the movie will get made because he is a name. My view was honestly I would rather it NOT get made than be dying in the theater watching what I thought was terrible with my name on it. So maybe that will give you a better understanding of why I can relate to Vinnie...IF he is indeed working on something and just isn't happy yet with it to share songs/samples on YouTube. If I am not mistaken - I think Vinnie's new album or portions was listened to at some studio for a select few, so maybe that is where it was taken with that rich guy who seems to love Vinnie and has commented on hearing the new music. You have gotten much better, but I remember during the first go around of The Freewheeler, I would always encourage you to post stuff that you would share with me saying it was great and it would take a lot for you to do it if you did it at all because you were worried about possible criticism. Delusional or not, I would have to think Vinnie has the same mindset with anything he does at this point, especially with people who are dying to shit on whatever he releases, but sure he made his bed there pissing off fans. Well Gene usually does things half-assed, so it would be more shocking that he still hasn't released a solo album that had been years in the making because he is still tinkering with it as a perfectionist and doesn't want to keep reusing lyrics like backbone slip.

That's what people have been doing with Vinnie for the last several years, if not longer. I totally get where you're coming from with your movie project, but will add this. Imagine if decades ago you accepted payments on a VHS movie that you never delivered. But time marches on and most forgave you. Then in addition to working on your movie, you kept posting press releases about the upcoming movie, even posing in a major studio with a financier. Yet years go by, and there's still no movie, but more announcements of upcoming releases. I hate trite sayings but at some point you need to s**t or get off the pot. If you've ever watched interviews with drug addicts, many of them have loving families; but they will not let them back until they admit they have a problem. Vinnie's delusions have been enabled for too long.

Look I am not saying Vinnie isn't a piece of shit or that he doesn't deserve such backlash with people not believing him anymore. He totally made his bed there. However do you think anyone who has said that they have indeed heard new music like the rich guy are lying? Funny enough, I was hyping the movie online when it was in development. Even almost bragging to family and friends as well that it's coming - because it was and I could taste it. Until it wasn't. I could honestly write a book or do a documentary on the development hell that I went through. It is a movie in itself. Now I am fucking bitter.
